I’ve got a lot of time for point and click adventures. If I cast my mind back to the days of Monkey Island there has always been this striking appeal that I’ve always been attracted to. Whether it’s the element of the mystery or the deciphering of codes, I’ve always been committed to solving the mysteries. This is why I’m really enjoying Secret Files 2 – Puritas Cordis by Deep Silver on the DS. A game that’s not too dissimilar from games like Broken Sword and Syberia.
If you’ve ever played those particular games then your know straight away how addictive they can be. You slowly start unraveling a mystery and before you know it, you’re already a few hours into the game. I know some people don’t have much time for point and click adventures because they find them too random. For example how would you know to combine the Cream cake that you found with the Tyre you recovered from previously?. It doesn’t make much sense, but curiosity is instinctive and that’s why I am forever playing puzzle games.
Deep Silver has really gone out of their way to make this game a stunning one. Why do I say that? Well, because when I first start up the game, I am taken in by the astounding cut scenes. The cinematography is pretty good on this game and almost movie like.
I am introduced as Nina Kalenkov and she receives a letter from Brother Matthew who discovers a parchment during the restoration that was made on the crypt of the local village church. Since the discovery of the parchment, he informs you that strange things have happened since it was found. He notifies you on of a break in; in which one of the brothers have disappeared, but he is not sure if that has anything to do with the parchment and that he is unable to decipher the text within the parchment. I’m sure you can see where this is heading…. so I’ll go on. The phone rings and a Superintendent Falk Ashford from CID leaves a message saying he needs to talk you urgently. I won’t tell you what he wants, because I don’t believe in spoilers, but it’s interesting. You continue to investigate and board a ship where you discover in your cabin a mystery suitcase….
I personally liked how this game panned out. First of all the story is captivating and is intriguing me. I must solve this mystery. Throughout the game you will meet several characters who will give you bits and pieces of information. Some useful, some not. You have to gather the details that you obtain from people, and search various places within the ship. Again it’s the same combination as before where you have to either pick things up, or collect things or just combine things. I like the fact that it gives you a reward tick if you have combined things right. I like this because on some of the Monkey Island games you would be searching and searching for the same item or trying to combine items and you would never know if they worked or not, so this game gives you a heads up on that. The music is terrific and gives off the right kind of atmosphere of the game. Using my stylus I was pleasantly surprised on how well the character moved around the scenery, as some games I have played have only offered limited movement for the playable character. I did sometimes get frustrated in this game, but mainly because I couldn’t always find in which direction I should be heading in, clue wise.
Discover the mystery behind the parchment and gather the information for this challenging and rewarding game that has you searching for the truth. This is a great point and click adventure game that will have you drawn in from the start.
