Steam community boycott Left 4 Dead 2

Posted by GG Goblin On June - 6 - 2009

A Steam community group calling themselves L4D2 Boycott (NO-L4D2) are venting their fury over the release of Left 4 Dead 2. Their complaints are as follows:

* Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
* Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
* The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
* The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
* The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
* L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic
* The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
* L4D2’s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
* The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

The group was started on June 1st and has, as of writting, 11,035 members. Thats quite a following in just 6 days. Will it change anything? Who knows…

If you share the same views regarding Left 4 Dead 2, then head over to L4D2 Boycott (NO-L4D2) and sign up.

  1. James Said,

Yeah, I love the first game but the last thing I want to see is a new version of it! I think it’d be better if they just kept updating the first one without creating a new game. And how dare they put a fiddle in the music?! Disgraceful behaviour.

  2. Another James Said,

    I disagree with James above.

Whilst I agree it is a little odd, maybe suspect, that they are ready to release a second L4D so soon after the first and I agree that it would be the norm to update the current version rather than create a new form.

However I suspect what has happened is that the idea box for the L4D series must have been overflowing because the new content drastically changes the mechanics of the original gameplay. Its still slicing up zombies in the hordes but this makes the use of everyday objects and limited ammo. I bet there was a split in the Valve camp as to how they wanted players to experience the game and have now produced two versions as a result. How they intend to price it will be critical because if it is viewed as an entirely new game and priced accordingly it may cause upset. If it offers a discount to existing L4D players that might offer a peacepipe.

  3. Jason Said,

I just read the Left4Dead2 preview in this month’s PCGamer magazine. I’m a big fan of Left4Dead 1 and a complete Valve head and I have to say if Valve think a second game can be a winner – go for it. PC Gamer, who I respect enormously, think it’s got winning credentials. In a way, isn’t it about trying to turn Left4Dead into a bigger commodity? Anything that keeps the experience rolling is great news – and Louisana sunshine won’t take the shine off it for me!

I just wanted to make you aware of our new website called This Is My Joystick.
Unlike other gaming websites we aim to cover all areas of gaming, in particular I thought you would be interested in an article on girl gamers which can be found here.

We are also always on the look out for staff, so let me know what you think.

    Huge Thanks for your time
