London MCM Expo 2009

Posted by TurtleGirl On October - 27 - 2009

Girl Gamers UK were invited over to the London MCM Expo for a chance to catch up with the latest games, comics and manga fun. There were a whole host of companies that took part in this wonderful and colourful event and I had a chance to look around and see what’s new on the block. Firstly I have to say I thought the cosplay outfits that everyone was wearing this year was unbelievable. It seems that everyone took great delight this year to dress as their favourite gaming or comic book hero.

It was fantastic to see so many people participating for this event and although I could’nt stay for very long I’m sure they had the usual cosplay competition which they host in the afternoon. This is where a runway is set up for people dressed up can come and display their costumes and win prizes. This is a tradition of the London MCM Expo and they sport this event each year.

As usual there were many stalls set up around the hall in which customers can buy memorabilia from their favourite comic book, tv or gaming hero. There were a vast selection of stalls which offered plenty of merchandise to buy.

Looking round I seemed to notice that there were plenty of gaming stands set up for people to enjoy the latest games. It was good to see the ‘Scribblenauts’ stand in which people could actually come and try the new game on the Nintendo DS. There were plenty of people gathered artound this stall enjoying the fun.

The SEGA Stand had Xbox 360 consoles set up for people to try out the new game ‘Bayonetta’. Bayonetta is an upcoming action game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles, directed by Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe series creator Hideki Kamiya at Platinum Games in cooperation with its future publisher SEGA. Set in a fictional city in Europe, the game will center on its title character Bayonetta, who can wield four handguns—among other weapons—and perform magical attacks to defeat various enemies. The game will have five difficulty settings; its two easiest ones will contain a game mode playable with only one button, similar to a mode Kamiya used in Devil May Cry. Its characters were designed with modern style and fashion in mind, while its music is largely upbeat and feminine.

I also managed to catch up with the ‘Ghostbusters’ team, who had a ecto 1 car on display in which you could look inside and another photo opportunity. They were a friendly bunch and looked like they were having fun in their full kit.

LEGO Rock Band was also on display for people to experience the latest title with the use of the peripherals including the drums, guitar and microphone. Everyone seemed to be having a great time rocking out. Other gaming stalls included the Left 4 Dead in which players could have a try on the new and upcoming title. Although there was a rather large queue for this one. Other top companies like Rising Star Games, 2k, Ubisoft, Capcom each having consoles to play the latest games.

At around 11am they unveiled a life size replica of the Master Chief’s vehicle of choice, the Warthog which was then surrounded by a group of spartans for photo opportunities. It was pretty massive, but very impressive. All in all I think the event was a great success bringing fans together with famous people, bringing the cosplay community together, allowing gaming fans to have hands on time with the latest games and allowing famous comic writers to meet up with their audience.

I would like to thank David Axbey for allowing us use of the press room and allowing us entry to this awesome event. You can visit the London Expo website with all the latest news.
