Nathan Drake is back to his adventures with the new and explosive adventures of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. This third person action adventure finds himself in a spot of trouble again as he is lured back into his treasure hunting days to find a mysterious artifact deep in the Himalayan valley of Shambhala. This time he’s adventure finds him in competition with a criminal who also wants the mystery artifact.
Nathan Drake is drawn in by the story of Marco Polo who departed China with 14 ships filled with over 600 passengers. During the eighteen months that followed, Marco Polo arrived at his destination, only one of those ships remained and only 18 passengers survived. Nathan Drake decides to go on a mission to recover the lost fleet and soon realises that Marco had gone on a secret expedition to recover the legendary Cintami stone. Nathan decides no matter what happens, he will recover the stone and unravel the mysteries and do whatever it takes.
While I engross myself in the storyline of Nathan Drake and his adventures I am truly captivated by Nathan himself and the locations that surround the treasure hunt. Big headed that he is, Nathan brings a top entertainment value when it comes to the storyline. I’m instantly moved by how well his character flows throughout the story. Controlling Nathan around the screen is an easy one, with a simple touch of directed buttons, you never feel lost.
In the first scene we find Nathan in what I can only term as a train carriage on the edge of a cliff. This is where we see Nathan at his best, as he frantically makes his way up the side of the carriage, dangling perilously over the edge, with mind blowing cut scenes. I find myself directing Nathan in what seems a mind blowing and scary situation. The moment is a tense one as I cling on for dear life while carefully maneuvering myself from one dangerous situation to the next. Nathan seems to take it in his stride, even though I’m holding the controller and slightly shaking with anticipation.
This is truly a breathtaking game causing me at one moment to think I’m actually watching a cinematic movie. It’s not until I have my gun, that I really understand what Nathan will have to go through in order to recover the stone. Nathan has many skills that provide him with the necessary tasks that he encounters. Each action he is involved in, makes him climb carriages, dodge bullets, run from speeding cars. This is a man on a mission, who won’t be stopped dead in his tracks. Even through the quiet times on his journey, I find myself looking at the beautiful and breathtaking background. I’m closely drawn in by the attention to detail as he passes through dense jungles or strides quietly through glistening lakes. Everything you could want from a game is here. Not only does Uncharted 2: Among Thieves bring you a full and entertaining plot line, it completely immerses you into each character that Nathan Drakes comes across.
Controlling Nathan is a simple one as the circle button performs 3 actions which allow Nathan to stick to cover, roll and drop from a ledge. Double tapping allows Nathan to roll into cover even if at times it seemed a bit clumsy. Other times while leaping from ledge to ledge seemed pretty straightforward.
The sounds that accompany the game are truly atmospheric and launch you into an ever flowing music that sets the scene perfectly. From the quiet and eerie jungles to the mind blowing explosions this is certainly a game that ingests its cinematic sounds very well.
The game itself is visually amazing and probably one of the best video games out there today that I thoroughly enjoyed playing. Drawing me ever closer to the life and death situations he encounters along the way. I was completely blown away by the cut scenes and how much detail had gone into them. Their not the usual half hearted cutscenes that you sometimes get on video games and you come away feeling short changed. This game gives you your monies worth with change left over. The sheer quality and game play of this game is astounding. The game play is addictive and storyline immerses me into a world full of goodness, but sometimes deception. I came away feeling very sorry for Nathan at times and the realities he had to face. His character is a well developed one and we are introduced to his character Chloe who is his trusty side kick.
Every action with the two of them brings you deeper and deeper into the game while influencing you into trying to decide who Nathan can really trust at the end of the day. The game is a well balanced one, enabling players to experience the full on adventure and make a worth while investment in. I always find myself dedicating so much time to this game, because it provides a seemingly addictive game. For some brief moment throughout the storyline, you think to yourself that Nathan will never get himself out of trouble, but you find that he is a never a disappointment, even though the game revolves mostly around him. He has a charm that seems to delight the ladies in his life and a fearless streak that he portrays throughout the game.
Whenever developers decide to do a sequel to a game I find myself thinking whether it will work or just completely ruin the whole story, but in this game they have hit the nail on the head. I don’t think I once felt disappointed throughout the game, because it keeps you on your toes constantly. Never a moment did I think that it would be anything less. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves brings a level of video gaming that I can honestly say I haven’t seen on another game before. All the elements, characters, storyline flow incredibly well throughout. It’s an exciting and compelling storyline that’s’ constantly bringing your attention to Nathan and the mysterious artifact. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a positively enthralling game that keeps you on the edge of the seat from start to finish.
