SpecialEffect is a small but unique national charity dedicated to helping ALL young people with disabilities to enjoy computer games and to help people with severe disabilities like our inspirational Patron Matt Hampson to have freedom via technology.
Matt was paralysed whilst training for the England Under 21 rugby team and is largely responsible for the charity being formed (Matt wishes to help people who are in his situation) after he met SpecialEffect Director Dr Mick Donegan and its early success in helping to transform the quality of life for people with disabilities helped by the charity’s projects.
Matt’s amazing story of courage can has been covered in the Sunday Times and the following news clip from Sky News explains a little about Matt’s remarkable strength of character.
SpecialEffect’s core projects include Stargaze, inspired by Matt and which seeks to help people who are paralysed experience traumatic injuries like Matt or have a sudden illness that causes paralysis . One remarkable young boy that the project has helped is young Lewis Jeynes and we hope that as our small charity grows we can help more and more people like Lewis via cutting edge eye gaze technology coupled with expert support from the SpecialEffect team.
Another cornerstone of our work is enabling people with disabilities to enjoy computer games via expert support and by making games accessible for those with disabilities. This has included fundraising to create and support the world’s first fully accessible computer games suite at the Helen and Douglas House Hospice in Oxfordshire (also the world’s first children’s hospice). This project has won a national innovation award and another of our projects, the SpecialEffect Games Roadshow, has also won a national award:
SpecialEffect has also recently launched a pilot website for disabled gamers that has attracted praise from David Cameron and through which we plan to spread the word about the possibilities for those with disabilities to enjoy computer games.
SpecialEffect is only a very small charity with less than five part time staff at any one time and is totally dedicated to helping as many people with disabilities as we can. Please do read more about our work at www.specialeffect.org.uk and please do get in touch if you might like to help
