Alien Zombie Death

Posted by David Hollingsworth On March - 16 - 2010

Alien Zombie Death. Not only does this game have an awesome name, it’s also my first PSP/PS3 minis game. But is it any good? Does it have what it takes to recreate that old school shooter feel on a modern-day console?

Alien Zombie Death is an old school, side-scrolling shooter. You jump around between platforms killing waves of aliens, zombies, and all sorts of weird monster things. It’s not just you and your gun however, there are many power ups that spawn onto the level. Collecting these will give you different special attacks or points. One such weapon is the rocket power up and it is probably the most devastating. Once you pick it up, simply shoot and it will lock onto the nearest enemy. But make sure to get the most out of it before the timer runs out. The two standard gun power ups are also pretty damn good. One allows you to shoot objects that would other wise be unkillable, like the spinning blades etc, and the other upgrade allows you to shoot enemies on platforms above and below you, with a sort of tri-shot.

At its heart this is a game about getting high-scores. You do this by killing the enemies and collecting the multiplier power ups. The faster you pick up the multiplier bonus, the higher it goes. This all sounds easy but it’s really not, because enemies will jump on your platform and other misc enemies will get in your way, like the spinning blades and electric. The different enemies also come with their own unique challenges. Some will walk around, others will fly and some will shoot at you.

The game’s progression is simple in design. Each planet has certain goals which award medals. These can be for killing X amount of one type of enemy or by getting a certain score. With its high score nature, the levels don’t end as such. When your lives run out, you die and then do the level again, or you can go to the next planet with the medals you have earned. The game features quite a nice amount of content for a minis game. Its addictive nature and old school style will have you coming back for more.

Alien Zombie Death is a great first experience with the minis for me personally, and it has certainly opened my eyes to what these little games can offer if they follow a simple formula. With easy to use mechanics, pick up and play and addictive gameplay, you are onto a winner. Alien Zombie Death is a great little game and the score system will have you challenging your friends to high score competitions. It’s a great feeling, knowing that you have the highest score on this manic shooter.

 ★★★★★★★★☆☆
