Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening Preview

Posted by CRayDancer On March - 4 - 2010

BioWare’s excellent RPG has already been graced by some downloadable content, which has allowed eager fans to spend an extra few hours adventuring through Ferelden in search of glory and reward.

Now Dragon Age: Origins Awakening, the game’s first full retail expansion, is set to unfurl a whole new adventure, complete with new areas to explore, fresh foes to face and brand new companions to accompany you on your quest.

From the start of Awakening, you will have the option to start a new character or import your existing Origins hero or heroine. If you start afresh, you commence at a suitably high level to match the trials and tribulations to come. Should you decide to import your existing character, their actions and experience in the main campaign will affect events in Awakening; you’ll also be given the chance to ‘reboot’ your previously-earned skills, attributes and talents, allowing you to take advantage of the new ones on offer.

A whole new chapter in the Dragon Age story awaits those who purchase Awakening. Set several months after Origin’s climactic events, it features new areas to explore – desolate swamps, bustling coastal cities and eerie dragon graveyards to name but three. These will contain familiar adversaries and new enemies to face, including the terrifying ghost dragon from one of the several gameplay trailers released to date.

Of course, you won’t be expected to face any of these new opponents on your own. One of the highlights of Origins was the well-written background of your companions, who constantly bickered amongst themselves, confided their innermost secrets and desires – and even provided romantic interest to those so inclined.

Although cameos from familar friends are promised to appear, Awakening features a full cast of new party members to recruit: rebel mages, idealistic young warriors, blood-spattered dwarven rogues and proud elven sorceresses. The characters in Awakening look set to contain the same level of detail, complex morals and hidden motivations as their Origins counterparts and we can’t wait to meet them.

Awakening also raises the level cap from the original game, allowing your characters to grow even more powerful and to take advantage of new devastating talents and abilities, which we’re sure you’ll need to take full advantage of to defeat some of the game’s fearsome-looking bad guys.

Although BioWare are still finishing balancing the gameplay and haven’t revealed how many additional hours are packed into this exciting-sounding expansion, we’re sure we won’t be disappointed, and are itching to face the Darkspawn once again and uncover more secrets and surprises of Ferelden along the way.
