Join Sonic, tails and Knuckles in four of the classic sonic games, all in one place. This collection includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. As always our little blue hedgehog has us dashing around the screen, jumping, rolling, running and spin dashing. Sonic has a need for speed in this game. Our little blue friend will do his best to survive and collect the infamous golden rings on his way.
Staying alive is always a difficult task when faced with enemies that want to attack you. Sonic will lose rings if he’s attacked and if he has a ring or two he can remain alive. If not then our trusty friend will lose his life and there will be no more Sonic. Sonic smashes his way through various item boxes with his trusty spin attack to get rings and collect special items throughout the game.
Racing through a lamp post or starpost, your score and time will be recorded. All of the enemies are worth a 100 points and defeating the famous Dr Robotnik at the end of each zone will earn you 1000 points. Playing through this game reminds me of when I first played Sonic the Hedgehog on my Game Gear; it was a timeless experience then and still is today. Although back then my Game Gear would go through vast amount of batteries on Christmas day because I didn’t have a battery pack and it was a mad scramble to find a shop that was open, when all of my newly acquired batteries were completely dead.
In Sonic the hedgehog, Dr Robotnik the crazy and mad scientist has taken innocent and fluffy animals and turning them into menacing robots. As the player you have to fight off enemies, rescue those beloved animals and stop Dr Robotnik in his evil tracks. Dashing through the 6 hazardous zones, each with three exciting and thrilling acts, is still difficult at times as I prong myself on spikes or get zapped my bees shooting at me. I still liked finding all of the secret levels and finding new areas that I hadn’t found the first time round. the game has a great appeal to me, even though I’m older now. At the end of each zone you will face Dr Robotnik who you will have to defeat and you have 10 minutes of gameplay time to clear each act, which is certainly enough time.
You have the special stages where you have to collect 50 rings at the end of each act and you collect chaos emeralds throughout each level.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 we see that Dr Robotnik has returned and is set on world domination. This time Sonic and his sidekick ‘Tails’ the fox are trying to stop the mad and evil scientist from discovering the Chaos Emeralds. Again this involves Sonic the Hedgehog racing through each level, swaying from vines, and destroying enemies.
In the third game, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dr Robotnik’s ‘Death Egg’ has lost its ability to fly after unfortunately crashing on the floating island. Only the true power of the Chaos Emeralds can repair his ship. Players will have to try and dodge Badniks and traps set by Knuckles, try and gather as many rings as possible and uncover the Chaos Emeralds through six different zones. Each game offers the same game play with the only difference being the storyline.
In the final concluding game in the collection, called Sonic and Knuckles, continues after blasting Dr Robotniks ‘Death Egg’ to pieces. Sonic embarks on a journey to find the Emeralds hidden on the floating island, but Knuckles is determined to stop him.
Each game offers a great collection of the Sonic games over the years. The game played well on the DS using the standard button controls, even though it’s on the DS which has a small screen, the sprites were displayed nicely. This is ideal for fans of Sonic, or for those who didn’t get the chance to play our little blue hedgehog the first time round. These are ideal classic games in one game that travels from retro gaming to the modern day sonic. A must for all Sonic fans!
