PSN Store Update

Posted by Bazaboy On April - 16 - 2010

Rather than just another update list of what has been added to the Sony online store, what we are aiming to do here is give you the list of additions, but also take a closer, more informed look at some of the games, demos, download content and other additions to the store. This will hopefully give you, the user, a more insightful look at what is available, making it easier to decide what is worth grabbing and playing.

PSSUPtitle_600x300

I am going to divide this into sections, such as full games, game content, and keep it an ordered affair that is easy for you the reader to find what you are after. I will start off with full games available for download.

FINAL FIGHT DOUBLE IMPACT £7.99/€9.99

What you are getting here is actually two high definition remakes of games from the past, those games being Final Fight and Magic Sword. both are side scrolling beat em-up games and what you get with this pack are pretty spot on versions of the original arcade cabinet games. This brings me to a nice little touch. Although you can play these games full screen, as you would expect on your TV, also included is an alternative view in which you are looking at the game as if on an old school arcade cabinet screen, complete with the cabinet surround on the edges, going so far as showing a list of moves and instructions on faded yellow labels. Although only a small visual addition, it is a special treat for older gamers like myself who remember such things. Both games are also multiplayer online for two players and the arcade cabinet thing is carried over here with a second player being able to drop in and out of the game whenever they like. When you start a game to play on your own, another player can search for a game and then drop into yours. Again it’s another nostalgic little touch that can be disabled if you choose to do so. Final Fight Double Impact could well be worth checking out if you have fond memories of either of the games, or just love that retro gaming feel. Then again, it could be another case of games fondly remembered being not so great to play again nowadays.

SECTION 8 £19.99/€24.99

Section 8 is a futuristic first person shooter, with players being equipped with jet packs and futuristic weapons to traverse long distances. Sound familiar? The game itself looks fairly good considering it is a download title and has plenty to keep the player interested, with matches being spread across fairly large maps and 32 players fighting it out over said maps. The usual selection of roles you would expect from a FPS available, Sniper, Spy, Medic, Heavy Weapons and such. But what is different with the class selection is that, once you have chosen your role, you are not stuck with it. You can change up not only on your death, but mid game.

You are also given plenty to do in game, not only fighting the enemy, but also defending objectives and dealing with secondary objectives that pop up on occasion, such as escort and assassinations for which you may reap rewards, but you risk leaving your main objective to do so. The game offers up plenty to keep you interested and is an above average shooter. But with so many first person shooters on the market, that are done so well, is there room for Section 8 in this genre?

SAM AND MAX THE DEVILS PLAYHOUSE EPISODE 1 THE PENAL ZONE

The absolutely hilarious Sam And Max hit the PS3 last week. But on the store this week was the free trial and unlock key for the full season of all five episodes, for the price of £19.99/€24.99. If you own a Playstation, you need to check this out now as you will not regret it. In case you have not guessed by now, I am a Sam And Max fan. But this is definitely worth it and I can not wait for the future chapters. If they carry on the way this series has started, then we are in for a treat.

SKATE 3 DEMO

I own the original Skate game, it being one of the games that came packaged with my current console. Although I enjoy the game, upon playing the demo for Skate 2, my thoughts were that there was not anything really added to advance the franchise and so I never purchased the game. I will try this demo, but I fear that it may be the same case with the third game.

On the other hand, the first game was a lot of fun to play and I can understand that the game will have a huge following and be as big a hit as the previous titles. The control system, so long as they have not changed it for the latest version, was genius and, for anyone looking for a skateboarding game for the PS3, this will undoubtedly be the one to go for.

GTA IV THE LOST AND DAMNED GAME PACK £13.99/€17.99

The GTA IV expansion packs are finally available for the PS3. Well, almost. They wont be available to download until the day after the usual PSN store update, Friday the 16th. The Lost and The Damned is the first of these packs and centres around Johnny Klebitz, a member of the biker gang, The Lost, which allows you to see Liberty city from a different perspective. this pack not only adds more single player missions but also new vehicles, weapons, music and even new Multiplayer modes. For big fans of the game, this is a must buy, especially after such a long wait for this content to hit Sony’s console.

GTA IV THE BALLAD OF GAY TONY GAME PACK £13.99/€17.99

This is second expansion pack for GTA IV and again it gives you a different view of Liberty city, that of Luis Fernando Lopez, a drug dealer and body guard of Anthony “Gay Tony” Prince, a nightclub owner. Again, not only does the pack add more single player missions but even more weapons and vehicles along with the ability to skydive and base jump from planes and tall buildings. With both of these expansion packs adding so much more content to an already great game, these packs are definite purchases for fans of the game. It is a bit of a shame we PS3 owners have had to wait so long for these bundles of fun.

DEAD TO RIGHTS JACK PACK AND SHADOW PACK FREE TO DOWNLOAD

Both of these packs were initially exclusives for pre-orders from certain retailers, and are now on the PSN Store for free download. The Jack Pack is a skin for the main character which, along with giving him a unique look, also offers him a handy health boost. The Shadow Pack offers up stealth camouflage for Shadow, along with a film noir mode which changes the colour scheme of the whole game. This is a game that I have never played but owners of it can not go wrong here seeing as the downloads are free.

JUST CAUSE 2 MONSTER TRUCK £0.79/€0.99

Just Cause 2, being a relatively new game, is starting to look like a title that offers up a wealth of new content, with new vehicles appearing on the store for the last couple of weeks. This weeks is a monster truck with a mounted weapons system on the back, ideal for causing more mass mayhem and destruction.

DANTES INFERNO DEVIL PACK £2.39/€2.99

Another game I have never played, but this pack offers up the Putrid Voice Spell along with the Panderers Lash Relic for the player to boost Dante’s Arsenal with.

DYNASTY WARRIORS STRIKEFORCE ADDITIONAL QUESTS

More free downloadable content and that is never a bad thing. This time for Dynasty warriors Strikeforce. This pack offers up three new challenges for the player, including Turban fortress Defence, Battle Of Jiang Ling and Wei Defence. This gives the players more to do in the game, which is always a good thing, and when it’s free it’s even better.

DRAGON BALL RAGING BLAST ULTIMATE WARRIORS PACK

Even more free downloads. Here, Dragon Ball players can pick up five new warriors for use in the game, Majin Buu, Super Buu, Kid Buu, Broly and Super Saiyan 3 Broly. The only thing better than DLC, is free DLC and stuff like this is always more than welcome.

ZEN PINBALL EXCALIBUR TABLE £1.59/€1.99

Being a fan of Pinball, both the video game version as well as the real thing, I do own this game and this is the second downloadable table with the Street Fighter one coming a few months back. The tables in this game are always well done and put together. But the one problem I have with them, is the fact that the tables can be quite busy, which can be a good thing, but personally the tables I like are the ones that offer a bit of room to play in. The Excalibur table is no different. It looks amazing, has so much going on and fits in perfectly with the other tables already in the game. For owners of Zen Pinball who are looking for more challenges, this is a welcome inclusion.

HUSTLE KINGS HEX CRAZY PACK

Woohoo, more free stuff. The purist pool players will no doubt frown at this kind of thing, but the latest DLC for Hustle Kings has involved adding new crazy shaped tables. Although they are not exactly traditional pool tables, they can be a lot of fun when you are looking for something a little more interesting than a serious game of pool and, hey, it‘s not like you are paying for it.

PAIN FLUFFER THE CAT £0.79/€0.99

Pain has been available for the PS3 for a long time now and the fact that there is still downloadable content being created and released for it, is a testament to how fun the game actually is. Even with it’s simple concept, the humour of firing the ever increasing cast of characters over the playing areas, to watch them smash into and destroy the scenery never gets old, no matter how many times you have done so. This pack adds another character for the player to fling around and use as living ammunition, in the shape of Fluffer the cat.

For the next few parts I will be listing the new tracks that have been released for the games Rock Band, Guitar Hero 5 and Karaoke Revolution I wont go into detail over this as it is all pretty self explanatory and I will start with.

PSSU150410pic5_600x337

The big news on the video section of the store this week is Future Publishing’s second episode of First Play. I have now watched and enjoyed both episodes of this show and have to say it is actually quite enjoyable and humorous. I can see myself subscribing to it as it is a pretty good way to keep up to date on what is happening in the world of Playstation. Also on the store this week are trailers for Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Way of the Samurai 3 and DC universe.

On the store is the usual handful of Wallpapers, Dynamic Themes and Avatars for download, so the user can spruce up their system. What follows is this weeks offerings

Dante’s Inferno, Dante’s Treachery Wallpaper Free Download

Mega Man 10 Dynamic Customized Theme 2 £1.59/€1.99

Shatter Dynamic Theme £1.59/€1.99

White Knight Chronicles Heartbeat Dynamic Theme £1.59/€1.99

EyePet Spring Dynamic Theme £1.59/€1.99

EYEPET AVATARS

Blue Goalie £0.20/€0.25

Pet Lying Happy
£0.20/€0.25

Pet With Football
£0.20/€0.25

And to wrap up this weekly PSN store roundup, here is a list of the latest items on sale.

TRINE £7.99/€9.99

I purchased Trine when it was initially released and it’s a pretty lengthy, good looking, side scrolling adventure game in which the player controls three different characters, each with different skills. For this new sale price, it is a great bargain.

RED FACTION GUERILLA DEMONS OF THE BADLANDS £6.29/€7.99

SAINTS ROW 2 ULTOR EXPOSED £3.19/€3.99

With this, I bring to an end this weeks look at what’s available for the PS3 to download. Until next week, I wish you all happy gaming.
