I have to say I am enjoying the move to midweek for the store update. It’s like a pleasant little treat halfway through the week rather than near the end of the week. Sure it’s only one day difference, but somehow it still feels better having it on Wednesdays.
So what do they have in store for us this week? Disappointingly, there is a distinct lack of games and demos this week. But what is lacking there is more than made up for on the Download Content side of things, with not only the usual updates for the music based games, but new content for games such as Little Big Planet, BioShock 2, Skate 3 and much more. As usual we will start with what little there is to offer on the games front.
Catan is based on the board game of the same name, which sees three or four players vying to be the first to achieve ten points. In the video game version you can play solo against AI players or online against other people, which is always much more fun. The game is played out on a board made up of nineteen hexagonal spaces, which are placed at random so the board is different every time you play. To gain points the player must build settlements, roads and amass armies, whilst your opponents do the same thing, in a bid to be the first to the total points. Having never played the actual board game I can’t vouch for the authenticity of the video game version, but it definitely looks the part. Fans of the board game will find something here to keep them occupied. Even for someone looking for something a little different, this could be worth checking out.
ROCKET KNIGHT FREE TRIAL AND FULL GAME UNLOCK KEY £9.99/€12.99
Rocket Knight is a new take on an old game, while retaining the old school side scrolling 2D qualities of the original. The player controls Sparkster as he runs, jumps and flies using his rocket through the levels, doing all the things you would expect from a side scrolling platform game. Negotiating obstacles, defeating creatures that are out to stop you and collecting objects. Things all fans of this type of game enjoy and I know I am one of those people. It is strange that even surrounded by all these technologically superior games sometimes, just sometimes, I like to go back to a simple side scrolling platformer. Which is why I will be trying this one out at least, especially because it offers us the chance to try before buying.
And that’s it for downloadable games this week. There is even less on the demo front this week, less as in none. But, like mentioned before, the lack of these is more than made up for with the wide selection of additional content for games.
BIOSHOCK 2 KILL ‘EM KINDLY GAME PACK FREE TO DOWNLOAD
The first in a trio of downloads for BioShock 2 this week is the Kill ‘Em Kindly pack which adds a game mode to the existing game maps. It has the players fighting using only the golf clubs in a melee attack. Sound crazy? it surely does, but it also sounds like a lot of fun.
BIOSHOCK 2 RAPTURE METRO MAP PACK £6.29/€7.99
On top of the aforementioned Kill ‘Em Kindly, Which is also available as part of this pack so you do not need to download both packs if you plan on buying this one. Along with the golf club killing spree mode are six new multiplayer maps. This pack also ups the players level cap to fifty, which was also included in previous DLC. To cap it all off, you also get two new masks and a new “rebirth†gene tonic. If you are a fan of BioShock 2 multiplayer mode, this looks to be a perfect way to add even more to it.
BIOSHOCK 2 BONUS MULTIPLAYER CHARACTERS £1.19/€1.49
And rounding out the BioShock 2 content are two multiplayer skins. These skins were previously available as a pre order bonus for the game, but are now being sold to other owners of the game and the pack includes Zigo D’Acosta skin and Blanche De Glace skin, giving us a little more choice when it comes to multiplayer.
BATTLEFEILD BAD COMPANY 2 SPECACT KIT BUNDLE £3.99/€4.99
The SpecAct Kit bundle is a new set of player and weapon skins. With this pack you get a total of eight player skins, one for each of the four classes on both side of the fight. Some of these are pretty cool, with others looking pretty much like existing skins, but that’s ok as the cool ones do outweigh those. Along with the skins, each class also gets a new custom weapon. The M16A2, UMP-45, MG3 and M95 Sniper are existing weapons in the game but are given a new look, giving the player a visual edge on the battlefield. We all know in virtual warfare, style is everything. The bundle also gives the player twelve new in game awards to achieve along with four new PSN trophies. If you are interested in these but you do not want to buy the whole bundle because you only play the one class in the game, then worry not as they are also being sold separately. So you can pick up the Assault, Medic, Engineer or Recon kits depending on what you play. Purchasing them separately costs the player £1.19/€1.49 each, pick em up and look good while killing.
LITTLE BIG PLANET MORE ANIMALS! COSTUME PACK £2.39/€2.99
Ahh, good old Little Big Planet. With recent news of the follow up being in the works, you could be forgiven for thinking that DLC for the original adventures of Sackboy would be drying up. Apparently not, as this pack proves. Previously, not long after the games initial release, a costume pack was released allowing the player to dress Sackboy as a choice of animals, my favourite then being the gorilla. As this title suggests, this pack expands on this, adding costumes resembling a fly, hippo, peacock and of course something that’s sure to please our editor, a turtle! As usual Little Big Planet’s costumes are nicely done, fitting the amazing look of the game perfectly. As with all costume packs for the game, they can also be purchased separately at a price of £0.79/€0.99 each.
NIER THE WORLD OF RECYCLED VESSEL £5.49/€6.99
Nier is a game I am not familiar with but, as with every game, it does have it’s fans. For them, this content will surely be welcome. It brings fifteen new levels for the players to play and explore and revolves around our hero playing through parts of his past life, brought to us through his wife’s diary. Whilst playing through these levels, the player will also be able to unlock both new weapons and new costumes .
WAY OF THE SAMURAI 3 HEAD AND OUTFIT SET FREE TO DOWNLOAD
Not much information on what is included in this pack, other than heads and outfits for giving your character a different look. But let’s be honest, when the content is free you cant really complain about what you are getting, because anything free for a game is always welcome. So download and enjoy.
SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV SUPER SHORYUKEN PACK £3.19/€3.99
Following on from last weeks first costume pack for Super Street Fighter IV. This time offering up brand new costumes for the characters Ryu, Ken, Gouken, Dan and Akuma and, again like last week, whether or not you buy this depends on whether or not you are a big enough fan of the game and must have every costume for every character. An option to buy separate costumes, so you could pick and choose, would be a nice option.
The following DLC is for Skate 3. Electronic Arts have released 3 pieces of content this week for this title. I have nothing against the game itself, in fact I played the demo released last week and enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the original game, which I still own and play occasionally. My problem is with EA themselves, bearing in mind this game is not even out yet, as of writing this, and has a recommended retail price of £49.99, which in itself is pricey for a game, but most gamers know you can pick this up for around £40 from most online retailers. The problem is, and EA have done this with a few of their recent titles, they release a DLC pack so near to the release of the game that you know this stuff could have been in the game to stat with. But yet they hold it back and sell it on as DLC weeks or in some cases days after it’s release. To buy all three DLC packs added to the store today adds a further £20 to the price of the game. Sure, this content is not essential to the game, but I really do have a gripe with EA for doing this kind of thing. Despite my feelings towards this I am here to discuss what’s available, so here it is.
SKATE 3 SKATE SHARE PACK £7.19/€8.99
One of the cool points of Skate 3 is the ability to create and share items including custom skate parks, which can then be put out there for everyone to play in and admire your work. However, to use these features you must purchase an unlock code to enable them and this is what you get here.
SKATE 3 TIME IS MONEY PACK £5.19/€6.49
This is one for the truly lazy gamers out there. Do you want to unlock everything there is to unlock in the game? Areas, skaters, and equipment? But you don’t want to put in the work to do so? Why not just pay for a code that unlocks everything there is to unlock in one foul swoop bish bash bosh done.
SKATE 3 FILMER PACK £7.19/€8.99
Although there are basic filming controls initially in the game, to get more out of this feature with a lot more filming options you must purchase the code, which is what is on offer here. So to get the most out of Skate 3, buying at least two of these packs is recommended. But you have to ask yourself, as I did, shouldn’t they have been included in the game to begin with?
HIGH STAKES ON THE VEGAS STRIP HIGH STAKES CONNELY CARD CLUB £2.39/€2.99
Playstation 3 Poker fans rejoice. Expanding on the best poker game available at the moment on the console, High Stakes Connelly card Club gives the players a whole new poker club to explore and hang out in, along with four brand new game types and a new poker championship for players to take part in. The pack also adds a handful of new PSN Trophies for the game. Poker fans should definitely pick up the original game if they don’t have it already and expand on it with this pack.
And as usual the DLC is rounded off with new tracks for the music games on the console.
DJ HERO’S DOMINATION PACK £6.29/€7.99

Sugar We’re Going Down £0.79/€0.99
The Joker And The Thief £0.79/€0.99
Video wise, this week it’s trailers aplenty, along with episode six of First Play. Like I have said before, this is a really nice little show giving out good information and going so far as to give you a laugh every week for only £0.99 or subscribe for a discounted rate. The list of game trailers this week is as follows:
Crysis 2 The Wall Trailer
After Burner Climax Launch Trailer
Mafia 2 Boom Boom trailer
Kane & Lynch 2 Dog Days Debut Trailer
Red Dead Redemption Gentlemen and Vagabonds Trailer
Little Big Planet PSP Turbo! Premium Level Kit Trailer
As usual, rounding things off are the themes that have been added to spruce up our systems. This week there is only one to choose from.
Sonic And Sega all Stars Racing Premium Theme £1.59/€1.99
And with that we round up this weeks PSN Store update. Not much in games or demos to choose from, but a shed load of download content prolonging the life of our favourite games just that little bit more. Have a great week all and have fun, no matter what you happen to be playing.
