This week, prepare your thumbs for some major button action. Whether it’s Wild West shooting on the fabulous new Red Dead Redemption title (out this week) or navel torpedoes launching, metal slugging gun firing, light saber wielding or tennis racket swiping, our opposable digits never had it so good!

In the arcade this week:

Aqua – 800MP

Take to the high seas as Captain Grey and fight to resolve the conflict between two rival naval empires and save the day in this speedy little naval warfare title. Be warned that although this game promises guns, torpedoes and mines, many of the missions are of the escorting variety which are sometimes maddeningly hard but you can try out new ships, weapons and upgrades or refine your tactical skills with four different squad types. With so many new and great Xbox titles out this week, I think this average title will surely sink without a trace.

Metal Slug XX – 1200MP

The eighth title in the Metal Slug series that once again features fearless warriors Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio who are on the hunt for General Morden and his army from the future to stop his evil coup d’état plans once and for all. Prepare yourself in the Combat school with more than 70 missions in this 2D action packed shoot em up. Fans of the series will love the chance to play on the big screen rather than the DS and it should satisfy most trigger-happy gamers this week.

Elsewhere to buy:

Star Wars: the Force Unleashed – £19.99

Taking place between Episodes III and IV, this is an excellent addition to the overall Star Wars story which will please all fans of the franchise whilst the options of how you can ‘use the force’ is broad and exciting enough to attract gamers wanting some frantic and powerful action. Taking on the role of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, your task is to comb the galaxy and defeat Jedi Masters by using Force-Push and Force-Grip to rack up devastating combos on all of those preventing your boss Darth getting his own way. This is fast paced with unique behaviours and reactions every single time you play. Watch metal bend like metal, wood splinter like wood and glass shatter like glass as you unleash the Force like never before. The more you level up, the more powerful you become and taking out loads of storm troopers in one fell swoop is immense fun and is my recommendation of the week!

Top Spin 3 – £17.99

With a month to go before Wimbledon, it’s time to warm up your rusty tennis brains and sharpen your skills. Luckily, Top Spin 3 is one of the best and most realistic tennis games ever made, so you can enjoy the very essence of a quality tennis match without the smelly trainers and sweat bands. With 20 top professional players to face (no, I really wouldn’t unless you’ve either completed all of the games training modes or enjoy not hitting any balls) including Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Britain’s Andy Murray, you can either play exhibition/tournament or career mode where perfect timing and footwork are the only way to progress and just like the real deal, the game can be unforgiving if you make mistakes or uplifting if you’re in the zone! All you need is for a friend to feed your customized character bananas during the breaks and pretend that Sue Barker is commentating live from your bathroom.

Add-Ons now and if you didn’t have your fill of Rock music last week, don’t worry – there’s more:

Rock Band has an assortment of Grateful Dead tracks, all of which are 160MP each or can be bought as a Track Pack for 800MP:

“U.S. Blues” by The Grateful Dead
“Touch of Grey” by The Grateful Dead
“Throwing Stones” by the Grateful Dead
”Scarlet Begonias” by The Grateful Dead
”Cumberland Blues” by The Grateful Dead
”Beat It On Down the Line” by The Grateful Dead

If you don’t like the Grateful Dead, check “Only a memory” by The Smithereens for 160MP

Split/Second Velocity
Full Vehicle Unlock! – 320MP

For a measly amount of MPs, you can instantly unlock all Split/Second vehicles and get a full garage without needing to win any credits in season mode! The only trouble you’ll have is now choosing which vehicle to blow up and destroy!

Master Unlock! – 560MP

Again, such a good Add-On that there’s an exclamation point in the title! Unlock all vehicles, game modes and tracks for the ultimate Split/Second exploding, demolishing, high-octane racing experience. What are you waiting for?

Dragon Age: Origins
The Darkspawn Chronicles – 400MP

One of the best elements of Dragon Age are the complex moral decisions you make that influcence the game play. No such decisions needed here, as this is a great Add-On for all fans. Play as the Darkspawn as the city of Denerim prepares itself for war. As a hurlock vanguard, you alone hold the power to make thralls of your fellow Darkspawn and drive them into the heat of battle. This Add-On includes: A standalone adventure in which you command genlocks, hurlocks, shrieks, and even the mighty ogres, PLUS, a look at an alternate history that asks what would have happened if your character had died in the Joining ceremony, and the Wardens marched under Alistair’s command instead… A must for all fans of Dragon Age.

Finally, Indie Games and this week it’s robots, and gerbils with some alcoholic fun thrown in for good measure – just how I like my weekend.

Dr. Mazing – 240MP

A slightly higher price tag on this one as any game with ruthless robots and cruel aliens usually is, but the animation is great and you get 10 levels playing either as Dr Mazing or his not so glamorous lab assistant. Fight to save the world from the evil Lord Gazal Nim (which is still easy to say after a glass of Moonshine).

Moonshine – 240MP

Talking of which, this game is best played before you have a drink as your trading and business skills are put to the test. Travel back to 1920’s prohibition America to sell alcohol on the black market and make yourself a tidy profit. The newspaper reports and police elements are nice touches and though overall, this isn’t a challenging game, I can see lots of potential in this title (would be good to see more raids and other ways of frantically shifting your stock) and as business games go, not a bad attempt.

Gerbil Physics 2 – 80MP

Look everyone, really fat gerbils in little rodent balls! Of course, the obvious thing to do is…BLOW THEM UP! Venture into heaven, hell and several places in between exploring 40 levels, mini-games and dastardly puzzles. Our little furry friends are tactically placed on the screen and your task is simply to destroy them using ropes, slingshots, blocks, bombs, disintegrators, machine guns and of course physics to determine the best momentum and velocity to achieve your aim! If anybody asks, it’s educational though we can’t promise the RSPCA won’t come a knocking!

Phew! Lots of action this week but as always, great fun. Keep those thumbs working out till next week!
