Weekly XBL Update

Posted by Tambo On July - 19 - 2010

So the new super sexy sleek 250GB black, noise reduced, slimmed-down 45nm CPU with integrated GPU Xbox360 comes out this week – Drooling? Sharpening my elbows to get to the front of the queue? Moi? ABSOLUTELY! Make sure you give you noble ole white box of wonder a fond farewell before trading it in by treating it to lots of fab downloads from the Arcade, as there are some heroic titles on offer:

DeathSpank – 1200MP

With classic designer Ron Gilbert’s (creator of “The Secret of Monkey Island” – see last week’s Weekly XBL) influence, this RPG was always going to be my recommendation of the week! Searching for a long lost artifact known as… the Artifact, browbeaten DeathSpank combs the land collecting loot, loot and yet more loot. You can hold up to 4 weapons at once (assigned to each coloured button; simple and effective always gets the thumbs up from me) to use on an array of wacky monsters which in turn leave behind yet more loot and weapons (poop hammer anyone?). With some brainteasers thrown in along the way and plenty of sparkly vivid visuals, DeathSpank is great fun to play but really is all about the dialogue – it’s brilliantly witty and you’ll learn bizarre things about the world you never knew you wanted to know about including the history of felt and chicken lips amongst other things. Did I mention that this is my recommendation of the week already? Love it!

Deadliest Warrior: The Game – 800MP

It’s a fighting game but not how we know it. Pitching some of the greatest fighters from throughout history against each other, you can choose to play either as an Apache, Knight, Ninja, Samurai, Centurion, Viking, Pirate or Spartan, all with their own signature weapon and abilities. Don’t worry about having to learn lots of button combinations to finish off the perfect KO (though the finishing strikes are bloody and awesome), overall, it’s kept simple however the gory rounds can still be realistically over within seconds with one crushing well-delivered blow! It never gets boring seeing a ninja fight a pirate and with 5 different play modes available plus lots of ancient weapons at your disposal have fun immobilizing your opponent limb by limb before finally chopping his head off! This game is great fighting fun!

Elsewhere to buy:

Conan – £14.99

Rated 18, Conan is a bloodied gut fest with ample bosoms and very tiny furry loincloths wherever you look which I suppose will make up for the fact that (rippling muscles and boobs aside), this game is not that pretty to look at. Killing machine Conan is barbaric in every sense of the word and you’ll learn ways of killing someone you would never have dreamt of in a gazillion years. Unlock hundreds of attack moves in order to beat the big end of level bosses and gain your magical armor back and don’t forget to save the odd scantily clad lady along the way. Can’t help thinking that this title might not appeal to everyone but violent combat-heavy action fans will love it!

NBA STREET Homecourt – £14.99

Hit the court with your streetball buddies in this visually awesome playground favourite. Thanks to the uber smooth graphics and simple control system, you can enjoy pulling off some amazing tricks and speedy pirouettes as you play against other NBA players on their homecourts to earn yourself some respect! Flood your Gamebreaker meter to pull of double and triple dunks whilst scoring points for making the other team look rubbish and with a cracking soundtrack to boot, this is a great summer sporting title.

Add-Ons now and there’s a few songs to get your vocal chords around:

Lips where each belting track is only 160Mp each:

”Back on the Chain Gang” by The Pretenders
”Locomotion” by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
”Get Down on it” by Kool and the Gang
”One Week” by Barenaked Ladies

Guitar Hero 5
Rock out California style with this Avenged Sevenfold Track Pack for 440MP:

”Almost Easy” by Avenged Sevenfold
”Afterlife” by Avenged Sevenfold
”Scream” by Avenged Sevenfold

Forza Motorsport 3
World Class Car Pack – 400MP

Head on out one of the hundred well known real-world tracks in your brand new car which might be one of these ten: 2011 McLaren MP4-12C, 2010 Acura TSX V6, 2010 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, 2010 FIAT Punto Evo Sport, 2010 Mercedes-Benz CL 65 AMG, 2010 Kia Forte Koup, 2011 Mazda 2, 2011 Citroen DS3 or finally the 2010 Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart. World-class sums it up nicely I think.

Things on Wheels
ToW RooAR – 320MP

More crazy tracks for the mini-monster truck racing game I this add-on that includes 1 achievement and 5 new courses: “P.O.W.E.R.”, “Need for Wheels”, “Sprint Time”, “Malo and Pablo”, and “Slick Nicky G”. Who comes up with these track names, seriously? Anyhoo, despite the names, still great fun!

Finally, Indie Games and the Earth is fighting back:

Acid Rain – 80MP

Following years of being told the population of Earth will probably be wiped out by some freak natural event, practice your survival techniques as you end up playing the hero after your camping trip is rudely interrupted by a volcano spewing poisonous rain into the area. Nice graphics and a poignant topic, this title is worth investigating, if only to make notes of what to do when the big one finally hits us…

Jurassic – 240MP

I’m not sure what the baby dinosaurs in this title would prefer? An early death from an erupting volcano (see above for survival tips) or countless skinny cavemen clubbing or kicking them that you as chief of the clan must battle? A nice idea here to use a classic puzzle format – connect coloured rocks to gain extra cavemen to fight the oncoming Jurassic beasts – and the graphics are clear and well presented. Great for one or two puzzle fan players.

Lumi – 400MP

From the makers of My Band (see last week’s XBL update) Lumi is one of the more expensive indie games available but you get an engaging a heart warming title that’s ever so pretty, who can say no? You play Lumi whose task is to save the Universe, which has plunged into darkness. Collect fireflies to help bring light back to the land by floating, swinging and rolling your way around 9 beautiful levels using your unique powers of magnetism which allows you to be pulled towards and launched from red or blue polarities. A stunning puzzle platform that shines with charm.

Goodbye old white Xbox, hello new shiny love black Xbox! Send your Tweets to @GirlGamersUK and let us know what you think of the new console. I’ve already polished the table where my new Xbox will stand and am still deciding which XBL game will have the honour of being the first to be downloaded onto the new wonder box! Have a great week.
