It’s Wednesday, and I think we all know what that means – it’s time for another weekly PSN Store update.Again it is a relatively small update this week but with the release of a game that I think a lot of people have been waiting to try out, a demo of a game that after trying it has me wanting to pick it up and a new content pack for one of the years biggest releases, and a personal favourite, it may not be much quantity wise, but there’s plenty of quality.

This week I found myself not only playing current favourite multiplayer game Red Dead Redemption, but I also got a call from a few of the guys I play a lot of first person shooters with, requesting that I reinstall MAG, change my PMC from Valor to SVER and come to blow stuff up. That is all the excuse I needed to get involved in yet another virtual war. it took a little time to get back into the game and I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I was beginning from the start with a level one soldier and basic equipment. But thankfully the initial levels flew by and as I unlocked better skills and weapons I found myself getting right back into the game. There is something kind of hectic, yet fun at the same time, when you are in a first person shooter match with 120 or more other players. Anyway, enough of that, let’s see what is on offer this week for us to spend our hard earned on…

Scott Pilgrim, originally a comic book series now adapted for film by Edgar Wright. To coincide with the movie release, we have the video game which loosely follows the story of the graphic novels. The game itself shares its looks with the comic book world, with cartoon like characters, scenery and bright colours all in an almost, but a little more up to date, 8 bit look. Gameplay is a pretty simple, side scrolling, button bashing, beat em up for up to four players locally. An online option would have been nice but you definitely should not let that put you off. The retro feel of the game makes it an absolute joy to play and even the repetitive button bashing combat style does nothing to detract from the good times the game gives – swinging fists and baseball bats is tons of fun once again. If you are still unsure, as I initially was, there is a free trial version you can download and give a go before deciding as to whether or not you want to pay for the unlock code for the full game.

Having never played the original Mafia game, on downloading this demo I expected a Grand Theft Auto clone and, although there are a lot of similarities, Mafia 2 is it’s own game. I am told that the first game had a great story line and so would expect nothing but the same for the second game, which we are told will span a timeline of around ten years in the game, from the early 40’s to the early 50’s. This leads to what, in my opinion, is an absolutely brilliant soundtrack played through radios throughout the game and in the vehicles. The demo on offer here gives the player a single, exclusive for the demo, mission along with ten minutes of free time in a small section of the games map. You are given a handy timer letting you know how long you have left, meaning you can leave the house at the start to make your way to the mission, which begins the ten minutes. At this point you can explore the map and get to grips with the cars. Do not for one minute think that, because the game is set in the past, the cars are slow and boring. The few you get your hands on in the demo are a lot of fun to play with, or you can spend your 10 minutes raising hell with the police. Time it right and you can reach the mission way point with seconds to spare, which triggers the mission giving you a further fifteen to twenty minutes of play. After playing this demo I made the decision that this is yet another game I need to add to my want list.

The second content pack for the greatness that is Red Dead Redemption comes to us this week in the shape of the Legends And Killers pack. This time the content concentrates on the competitive side of things – shootouts, team shootouts and bag games all remain unchanged, but the pack more than doubles the number of maps that these games are played over with the addition of nine new locations taken from the existing map. Most notable is Blackwater. Bringing the fight to the more modern town in the game, running through the alleys and rooftops, means this one is going to be ideal for both close combat and the sniper. Thieves Landing, the dreary dockside town means lots of sneaking and hiding. The one I am looking forward to is Tall Trees, taking the fight to the mountains and forests of the game. On top of the maps there are eight brand new player skins for us to use. These are taken from Red Dead’s predecessor Red Dead Revolver. To round things out there is a brand new weapon, the tomahawk, deadly thrown from short distances along with new challenges for the weapon and new trophies to earn.

This week also brings with it another expansion for Dragon Age Origins. This one is aimed more at the more experienced players with high level characters, but even then this promises to be challenging as they face off against a new terrifying creature and find some powerful items on the way. The quest itself has the player travelling deep underground in search of a missing dwarven expedition which has disappeared while searching for the knowledge to create monstrous constructions. Can you guide your heroes through the caves and underground caverns? If you are a fan of Dragon Age Origins, then there is only one way to find out – download this pack right now.

The Yakuza 3 Challenge pack was initially a pre-order bonus that has now been released for the paying public to snatch up and play. So what does it add to the game? More violence? More weapons? More combat, death and destruction? Well no, not really. What it does add is a selection of mini games for players to take part in, including pool, darts and bowling. So when you feel the need to take a break from breaking faces, you now have a choice of activities to take part in and help you relax. If that was not enough, there are also four new outfits to wear while taking your time out. A nice little addition for the Yakuza 3 players to pick up and add a little variety to their game.

That brings to an end another weeks update for the PSN store. I personally will be picking up both the Red Dead Redemption Pack, which means I will be playing even more of that throughout the week, and Scott Pilgrim. On top of all that, the kill fest in MAG continues. The song asks what war is good for and my answer is nothing other than video games. Have a good week everyone and happy gaming until next time.
