PSN Store Update

Posted by Bazaboy On August - 22 - 2010

Wednesday rolls around once again and brings with it another PSN Store update for our enjoyment. There are no games in the update this week. But we are given a couple of demos, one of which is a game i am looking forward to. There is also new content for a couple of old favourites, along with the usual Rock Band and Guitar Hero updates. What we do have an abundance of this week is trailers. Along with the usual handful, there is a whole stack of new game trailers direct from GamesCom 2010.

My weekly game playing has been a little busier than the usual juggling of two games. Red Dead Redemption is still one of the main games I have been playing, with the Legends And Killers pack adding to it’s enjoyment. Alongside that I have also gone back to MAG fighting with a couple of old friends online. As if that was not enough, I have revisited The force Unleashed, after reading more about the sequel coming soon put me in the mood to play it, and also Madden NFL 11, which I did not expect to enjoy quite as much as I have been. Expect my review of it on the site within the week.

But anyway, what we are all here for is of course this weeks PSN Store update. So without further babbling from me, here it is…

NHL 11 DEMO FREE DOWNLOAD

Of all the American sports out there, Hockey is one of the few that I enjoy watching and therefore playing, albeit in the video game world. In real life I am unable to even skate, but the NHL games are always a lot of fun to play. I do not buy them every year because the changes made in the game annually are, in my opinion, not enough to warrant upgrading with every title. But this year’s title promises a lot of changes from the last one I owned, which was NHL 09, with the addition of a new physics engine, promising better skaters and puck physics including bigger, more impressive hits, along with many other tweaks and additions, broken sticks and greater stick control. Upon playing the demo I have to say it is a big enough jump from 09 to warrant buying it. Whether than same can be said about the 10 title, that is a question only owners of it can answer. So download the demo and give it a go, even if you have never played a hockey game before, it is a lot of fun.

TOM CLANCY’S H.A.W.X 2

H.A.W.X. 2 Is a sequel, as designated by the number two, to the original H.A.W.X. which is an aerial combat game, sending the gamer into the combat arena flying various fighter jets to take out both air and ground based targets in a series combat missions. The game is not quite an afterburner like arcade game, but not so much of a simulation that the controls and things you need to keep an eye on become overwhelming. This makes for an interesting game and, as expected with the second game in the series, there are a whole bunch of new features adding to the realism of the game, but maintaining the playability by keeping it from becoming overly complicated. The new features include the likes of take off and landings, UAV’s, mid air refuelling and what follow up would be complete without a host of new weapons and crafts. Download the demo now and give it a wee go, see what you think.

SKATE 3 SKATE CREATE UPGRADE PACK £5.10/€6.49

With Skate 3 there came a create and share mode for building your own skate parks. Unlike other games with create modes that release content packs of new building objects in smaller more theme based packs, this bundles a whole host of content, both new clothing items and numerous new items to jump and grind, ready to be added to your own skate parks and then shared with your friends. I have yet to really get deeply into the creation side of the game, only dabbling with it while writing my review. But even using the simple drag and drop system implemented in the mode, you can create some amazing parks to play in and with this addition you can create even more stunning playgrounds.

MODNATIONRACERS MOUSE TRAP PACK £2.39/€2.99

The latest addition to the ModNation Racers kart and driver line up introduces a cat using his kart, as the name suggests, as a mouse trap. As usual the pack comes with six parts that can be used as the whole Mousetrap ensemble or used as separate parts for your own creations. The parts included for the racers are cat ears, cat eyes and claws, and for your kart creations you are given a cheese wedge body, round cheese wheels and a few cat toy ornaments for the decoration of your kart. Add to your ModNation customisation options today with the Mouse Trap Pack.

A couple of new characters for Pain players to throw across the various playgrounds, causing destruction and, of course, pain to all your little human cannon balls. First up we have Jolly the elf, an early seasonal gift. This little half sized chap comes complete with seasonal outfit and candy cane ready to be thrown about. Secondly, you have sergeant Jay, an old school no-nonsense American law enforcement agent, ready to bring some pain of his own to the game. You can pick either of these new characters now for a bargain price. It is nice to see this game still receiving love from it’s developers, even after all this time.

UNCHARTED 2 AMONG THIEVES SIDEKICK SKINS PACK £2.39/€2.99

It is like a costume and avatar bonanza within this week’s PSN Store update. Uncharted 2, one of my favourite all time games with it’s spectacular single player story coupled with it’s oh so fun multiplayer mode, has been shown so much love by it’s developers, with many updates and content packs. This week brings with it a new sidekick costume pack which gives players the choice of eight new costumes or characters for use in multiplayer, including three new Sullivan costumes, Wet suit Elena, Mac and Dillon characters, the bad guys from the original Uncharted game, Borneo Chloe and the one I and many others have been waiting on, Heist Chloe. Sure, there are no new game modes or maps. But these are still more nice additions, giving us more choice when it comes to characters.

Now we come to a busy section this week. There are a lot of videos in the store, most notably new trailers direct from GamesCom 2010, along with FirstPlay Episode 020 for the princely price of £0.99/€1.20. Without further ado, here is the huge list:

That is a lot of trailers and it brings us almost to the end of this week’s update. As usual we wrap things up with a little selection of themes, wallpapers and avatars for your system. If you look just below here, you will see what is on offer.

With that we come to the end of yet another PSN Store update. A decent choice of new characters and costumes for some big games, and a huge list of game trailers from GamesCom. Until next week, that is all we get. Hopefully there is something there that grabs your fancy. For me it is the NHL Demo and the Uncharted skins, which of course means I am going to be playing Uncharted 2 online over the next week, it is the kind of game that you just can not go wrong with. Whatever you are playing this week, have fun and happy gaming.
