It hardly seems like a week since the last update but none the less here we are once more, another Wednesday upon us which brings with it another PSN Store Update. It’s a fairly mixed selection this week, with a few games to choose from, a couple of them with trial versions, a demo and a handful of content for existing games including your usual new tracks for both Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
So what have I been doing game wise this week? First up I have been playing Madden NFL 11, my review of which should be on the site by the time you are reading this, or soon after. Other than that I have begun my first ever play through of Bioshock, which I am enjoying so much it surprises me that I have never played it before, and of course, due to the new content last week, I have once again been all over Uncharted 2 multiplayer. It is a game that never lets me down. It’s been a pretty simple week gaming wise for me. Simple but a whole lot of fun. Anyway, onto this weeks update…
SHANK FREE TRIAL AND £9.99/€12.99 TO UNLOCK THE FULL VERSION
Shank is violent. That’s your warning, or maybe that is all you need to be picking this one up. The gameplay is old school side scrolling action with the added attraction, if you are like most other gamers, of weapons. Players start off with a basic knife, which alone is capable making a proper mess of the bad guys, and progressing through the game gives access to more powerful and fun weapons, both guns wise and a multitude of melee weapons too, including the fan favourite chain saw. Gameplay itself, from what I have seen, appears to be your typical side scrolling, platform jumping, button bashing, beat em up with a healthy dose of the red stuff thrown in for fun. The gore itself is not overly realistic though, so do not let that stop you if you are the squeamish type. It’s very much the tomato ketchup style of blood and actually looks like a good bit of fun to play, if you enjoy side scrolling beat/shoot em ups, and with the free trial available you really can not go wrong.
JOE DANGER FREE TRIAL AND £9.99/€12.99 TO UNLOCK THE FULL VERSION
Joe Danger has been available to us in the PSN Store for a few months now, but for those of you who have yet to sample the joys of this game, this week brings with it the free trial version. I won’t go into too much detail here as we already have a full review of the game here on the site for you to check out and see what fun is in store. But in a nutshell, Joe danger is a game in which the player takes control of a stuntman who has fallen on hard times and is now well on his way back to the top. It is essentially a high speed side scrolling platform game that has you guiding Joe through levels on his motorbike, hitting jumps, hopping over and ducking under obstacles, while racing through the stages at break neck speeds. There are many challenges and goals to achieve in each level, ensuring there is plenty to keep you entertained and now there is the free trial you can at least check it out before handing over your hard earned cash.
PIXELJUNK RACERS 2nd LAP £6.29/€7.99
PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap is less of a sequel and more of a re-imaging of the original game with new challenges, game modes, online leader boards and PSN Trophies now included for that extra challenge. So players of the original need not think that it is a rehash, as there is plenty of challenge here, even for them. The gameplay does not really play as you would expect for an overhead racing game. I think the best way to describe it is by comparing it to slot car racing where you control the speed of the car, but the corners are all taken care of. Where the skill comes into it is that the tracks are split into numerous lanes, so your car is on rails and corners are handled but the player has to look ahead of their car and switch lanes so as to find the clearest route through the traffic, as hitting other cars slows your car drastically. It is a novel and original way to go with a racing game and, keeping in mind for me at least PixelJunk have yet to disappoint with one of their addictive games, that is reason enough to check this one out.
MOTORSTORM 3D RIFT £9.99/€12.99
Since Sony’s initial release of 3D games on the PSN store, which truth be told was not exactly awe inspiring, the 3D scene has been quiet. But now we see what could really be called the first big name title to show up, aimed at owners of one of those expensive cool new televisions that come with a pair of cool looking sunglasses. If you have played any of the games in the MotorStorm series, you know what kind of crazy off road racing you can expect from this. What you get here is not a full 3D representation of Pacific Rift, more of a best of, in that you are given ten of the tracks from the game with a selection of the vehicles. I cannot really comment on the 3D side of things as I have yet to experience the joys of said technology. 3D Rift is of course aimed at those with the tech to run it, but this version of the game can be run as a normal non-3D game. However, if you already own Pacific Rift then you do not need this as you already have everything that is included. If you do not own the game, or have the ability to run the three dimensional version, then this could well be worth checking out.
MAG PERSISTENT BETA FREE FOR MAG OWNERS
The persistent beta for MAG is basically a way for Zipper to reach out to their community and allow their players to try out and voice their opinion on new content and gameplay tweaks before they go live. It’s a pretty good idea and one that could work well, so long as the developers actually listen to what their gaming public actually has to say and do not just use them as lab rats. It is also a nice way for us to actually get our hands on new content before it is released, sort of like an open demo of new gameplay modes. Keep in mind that to be able to gain access to this beta you must already own the game. Pick this up if you are a big fan of the game and want a little say about what changes are coming to the game in the future.
NARUTO SHIPPUDEN ULTIMATE NINJA STORM 2 DEMO FREE DOWNLOAD
This is a game that I must admit I do not know to much about, other than it is a three dimensional, cel shaded, fighting game with it’s back firmly rooted in the manga series which spawned it. From what I can tell, it remains pretty true to these roots with over forty characters from the series playable and making an appearance in the game. Not only is there the fighting side to the game, there is also a hint of exploration and free roam to things with, i am guessing, a village and surrounding area recreated for players to walk around and find what they can find, perfect for downtime between your fights. The game also has a story that fits with the games background and fights have the player going in with three combatants which you can switch between using shoulder button,s giving it a little originality over most other fighting games. This one is definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of fighting games or if you are a fan of the manga series itself.
NAUGHTY BEAR EPISODE 8 X-BEARS FREE DOWNLOAD
Next up we have new content for the game Naughty Bear. The game has been on release for a month or so now and for those who have already finished the single player story and are hungry for a little more, then episode 8 X-Bears is perfect for you. With Naughty Bear being invited to a cake tasting party, who does not love cake right?, are the other bears reaching out a hand of friendship to him or is it all a devious ploy to trap Naughty Bear? Personally to me this sound like a set up for Naughty Bear to start more trouble, strife and of course mayhem. Now you Naughty Bear fans can extend your playing pleasure and what makes this content even better is that it is completely free. Let’s be honest, it’s always a lot more fun when it’s free.
MAFIA II THE BETRAYAL OF JIMMY £6.29/€7.99
Mafia II The Betrayal Of Jimmy is a PS3 exclusive available to download from the store on the day of the games actual release on the 27th of this month. Although The Betrayal Of Jimmy has it’s own story, it does crossover with the main story line in the game and so it is recommended you play the main story first. Talking of story, as you can guess from the title of the content, it’s all about this chapters protagonist, Jimmy, who has been doing jobs for families for a good part of his life. When he is betrayed and unsure of what to do, he begins taking jobs from other people and, as you could imagine, leads to some upset people. The contents basic gameplay remains the same, but the style, we are told, is a lot different in that it encourages you to concentrate more on the action side of things in both your shooting and driving. So blowing stuff up and driving like a maniac is the order of the day here. To enforce this more fast and frantic style, online scoreboards are included encouraging you to try again and improve your score. If you plan, like I do, on picking up Mafia II sometime then after completing the story mode, you may well want to look into picking this content up for a little more action to be added to your game.
