GGUK were invited over to Victoria House, London on the 9th September for the Halo Reach Blue Carpet event. The ‘Halo” franchise is a global entertainment phenomenon, selling more than 34 million units worldwide and netting nearly $2 billion in sales to date. So to say we were pretty excited was an understatement.
We arrived to notice huge queues forming along the outside of the building as people were anxious and excited to get into the Halo Premiere event. GGUK managed to get in early and avoid those chaotic crowds. We made our way down the stairs to the hall. Along the foyer area standing tall were two massive Spartans in all their glory, as people took loads of photos on their way in.
Inside the venue, one area was set up as a VIP section, on one side was the bar which had a selection of cocktails and there was an area where they were hosting the latest sounds for the event. There was also a mysterious white curtain which no one could go near and this made us both very curious. Initially when we arrived, it wasn’t too busy and people seemed quite relaxed with their drinks. As time went on we soon realized more and more people were piling in and moving forward to the stage area.
The stage area was set up with a huge screen on the wall and each side were two tables filled with Xbox 360 controllers. This was where we would soon see the much talked about Elite Spartan Squad, which was made up of five ‘gamer’ celebrities and one lucky gamer, 17 year old Lewis Chapman who out of 800 people, won the chance to captain the team. The Elite Spartan Squad included footballer Rio Ferdinand, rugby player Ben Cohen, T4 host and model Jameela Jamil, R&B and pop star Mr Hudson and Gadget Show Host Jason Bradbury. Even though the blue team tried to kill the red team they couldn’t beat them. There was a great deal of shouting and screaming to motivate both teams and we watched as each team member got slowly killed off on the screen behind them. It was a complete massacre at the end of the day. It was pretty exciting to watch to see who would win and what the outcome would be.
After much noise, sweat and testerone, the Red Team finally won and lots of applause and appreciation came from the crowd. Each team captain came away with a silver cup as a reward for this momentous effort as they fought hard against each other in the most exciting Halo battle ever. It was pretty epic and we had so much fun.
Once all the cups had been given out, they then made the surprise announcement that they had 40 consoles hidden behind the white curtain for us all to go and play Halo Reach. Needless to say we waited a while, as everyone stampeded into the console area. Eventually, when the crowds had died down a bit, we had a game to see what it was like and we were impressed. We stayed a little while longer and then headed out with our Halo Reach bags and a smile on our faces.
