PSN Store Update

Posted by Bazaboy On September - 24 - 2010

It’s that time of week once again, the time when we get to see what special goodies are going to be thrown our way on the PSN store for us to enjoy and enhance our gaming experiences. This week brings the return of a new video game hero in the shape of Deathspank, the return of a gaming legend in the shape of a small blue hedgehog and then a little something that is going to have me again playing one of my recent favourite games.

As for the past week, I have been playing a fair bit more of Final Fantasy XIII until once again I hit a boss fight that stumped me and so felt I needed to take a little break. I’ve been playing Worms 2: Armageddon which, like the first game on the PS3, is dangerously addictive especially when playing online. The game is a huge amount of fun and, on top of that, it is hilarious to play. The other game that I have been playing this weekend was once again Uncharted 2, mostly because Naughty Dog consistently add content and host what is called “The Lab” games which are more or less the same, but with parameters. For instance, this weekend we were playing death match with only the Desert high powered pistol – so much fun to be had. Anyway enough of that for now, what are we being given this week to enjoy.

The first Deathspank game is still relatively new on the PlayStation Network, so it was a bit of a surprise to see so early a follow up game. Not just downloadable content, but a whole new game. Saying that however, the looks, style and gameplay are more or less identical to the first game, as in Thongs Of Virtue is still an action Role Playing game. The story picks up right from where the first game left, but this time around the game takes a very Lord Of the Rings Like turn story wise, substituting the ring with underwear, a thong to be precise, the wearer of which is slowly taken over by a dark force, and so begins Deathspanks new tale. If you were a fan of the first game and are yearning for more then this week is the perfect time to grab it as not only do you get the game, but also for this week only inclusive of the games price you receive some download content  which you will have to pay for come next week. So grab it now if you want it.

Our little blue hedgehog friend Sonic appears here on the PlayStation once again in a port of the Dreamcast classic Sonic adventure. It is one of the few sonic games in 3D that was a lot of fun to play and although I am still more of a fan of Sonics side scrolling adventures, this one was one of the exceptions due mostly to the fact that it was a lot of fun to play. The usual Sonic gameplay is what you can expect here, running through stages at high speeds, bouncing on top of various death dealing creatures and of course collecting shiny gold rings. So if you are looking for some fun Sonic The Hedgehog action, then this is the one.

SKY FIGHTER £7.99/€9.99

Sky Fighter is a hectic side scrolling shooter in which the player takes control of a variety of planes and is then involved in a series of dogfights and bombing runs over a series of levels. From what I have dug up on the title, it appears to be a fast action game with a few types of planes, both fighter planes and bombers, which are used depending on your mission. The shooting and action looks like it can get very busy at times with more than a few enemy planes or ground targets on screen at one time, ensuring there is plenty for the player to take care of and hopefully a great challenge. If it’s a side scrolling shooter you are looking for then this could be the one for you. Give it a wee look and see.

A little more side scrolling action with Blade Kitten. This time it is the more traditional guiding your character through a series of stages, battling various creatures. The player takes control of a rather cute manga style female cat woman, or furry I do believe they are called, who as the title of the game suggests, fights using a blade. As you may expect with a Japanese style game there  are some huge monsters to deal with and plenty of action to keep players happy with a good mix of both platform hopping action and combat. If this grabs your fancy, then grab it now for some play.

NAB Elite 11 s this years basketball effort from Electronic arts stable of sports games. I am the first to admit that I am not the biggest sports games fan, that is unless it involves two or four wheels and an engine. Other than that sports games for me are kept to a minimum, some ice hockey and golf maybe. So basketball is a pass for me. However I have to say that EA’s latest game certainly looks pretty impressive, and I would imagine that it has a multitude of options and gameplay styles like the majority of EA’s sports games do. Whether it plays as well as it looks however, I am unaware. But I am tempted to give the demo a shot just to see. It’s another chance for fans of the series to try the latest addition before picking the game up.

Ah, good old athletic sports games, another genre I have not played in a long time. In fact the last time I did play one, they were still the type of game that required you bashing the hell out of two buttons repetitively. As I remember they cost me at least two new controllers. I am glad to see that things have moved on a little from back then with titles such as this Summer Challenge Athletics. And it is not only the button bashing controls that have changed, there is a much wider and more eclectic choice in events from archery to trampoline, cycling to fencing and a few other old favourites thrown in for good measure. If this is your kind of thing, then this could be just for you. It sure looks a whole lot better than those old games also.

Bless Rockstar for making and keeping Red Dead Redemption a great fun game to play. They keep it fresh by releasing regular download packs and this week’s is one of the best so far, adding a whole bunch of content to the online free roam mode. Most notably, and as you may guess from the title, a fan requested feature of online gambling with both Texas Hold ‘Em Poker and Liars Dice being added to the online side of the game, allowing you, your friends and others to enjoy the games together. Also added to free roam are seven new gang hideouts for you and your posse to take on, along with several new hunting grounds. If that was not enough, there are also now online horse races and the absolutely insane new weapon, the explosive rifle. Access to this gun is limited and ammo on short supply, but when you do get your hands on it a direct hit on an enemy will see them turn into nothing but a gory explosion of redness, with all other nearby bad guys being knocked to the ground. Must buy for Red dead fans.

A new Skate 3 pack with some old favourites. You can take your skater on a trip back to the past games with a visit to San van and the inclusion of a brand new skate park, along with the return of some old favourite game modes. Party play makes its return to the skate series, so players can once again go head to head competing in events such as the Spot Battle where players battle it out, attempting to achieve the highest score in a single location, along with 1-Up where players simply takes turns in trying to better the previous trick and SKATE where a player sets a trick which the second player must replicate. Failing to do so gives your opponent a letter. Players take turns setting the trick and the first player to spell out SKATE by earning letters wins. This pack is worth picking up if you are looking to add a new location and a handful of game modes to the title.
