PSN Store Update

Posted by Bazaboy On October - 15 - 2010

Welcome back for yet another weekly update to the PSN store. This week’s update brings with it a vast improvement on the last two rather barren updates with both a couple of games, a good selection of demos, one of which I am particularly happy to see there, and a decent load of Content for existing games on the market, along with all your usual stuff that you see every week.

As for me, this week it has all been about the racing games after purchasing both a steering wheel for the PS3 and F1 2010, reviews of both you can find here on the site. But with the wheel I have been playing a whole bunch of racing games, Dirt 2 and Gran Turismo Prologue being the main protagonists. Bring on GT5… what? Are you kidding? Bloody hell, delayed again, sigh. Anyway that has been my week of gaming – basically driving cars like a madman.

The return of our favourite little blue hedgehog in an all new adventure. Let us hope it is better than all of his previous next gen console outings, which if we are being honest would not really be that tough as a good Sonic game has been sorely missing for a while now. One thing I think is going to make this a successful outing for the little blue guy is that SEGA have gone primarily with the old school side scrolling that made the iconic hedgehog so famous in the first place. Episode 1 follows on from the end of the previous Sonic game, Sonic & Knuckles. After defeating Doctor Eggman’s space station, our heroes part ways. Unknown to Sonic however, Eggman has survived that attack and has sent many a robotic minion after the little blue spiky haired chap. The first episode contains four zones, each with three acts and ending in a boss battle. Taking Sonic back to his roots I think is a smart move on the developers side.

Dead space ignition is a prequel if you will to the upcoming Dead Space 2, and plays out a little like an interactive comic book with a hacking based mini game for the player to take part in. The big draw for this release I think will be the fact that, on carrying out tasks within the game, you unlock items that you will be able to use, including an exclusive suit for the hero of the upcoming game Isaac Clarke among a few other items. The small games that make up the playable hacking parts are very much small simple games such as maze games, turret defence games with a twist in that the player is on the offence while the AI plays the defence, and a side scrolling race game. Although it sounds like it is basically a bunch of simple puzzle games, if you are a fan Dead Space and plan on buying Dead Space 2 then this may well interest you as it helps set up the story and also offers some exclusive content.

This is another game I have eagerly been awaiting as the sequel to one of my favourite games. On playing through the demo now three times, I have to say the improvements that have been made to the game are impressive, both gameplay wise and graphically. The demo lets you play through the first levels of the game set on the cloning world of Kamino and lets you try out some of the new features including the heart pounding action scenes and smoother combat. One of the cooler things I have noticed is when attacking stormtroopers, you can now chop off heads and limbs as a lightsabre should. The basic gameplay remains more or less the same, and thankfully so as it was good in the first game, but almost everything in the game has been improved on, meaning more of the same great gameplay only a whole lot better.

Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 is a 3D fighting game based on manga and anime series Dragon Ball. This means the fan base is really already established with both fans of the original game and of the series itself. As a fighting game you can already make an educated guess at what is involved and that is one on one fighting, either against computer controlled opponents or against other players. I can not really think of much more to say about this one because I am not knowledgeable on either Dragon Ball or fighting games themselves, as many know. However, if you are then I am sure you know what is on offer here and the demo is here for you to check out.

SKy Fighter is a game that popped up in the PSN store a week or so back, you can check out my review of it here on the site. For those that did not buy the game but may be interested, then the demo is here free to download now. Sky Fighter is a hectic side scrolling shooter in which the player takes control of a variety of planes and is then involved in a series of dogfights and bombing runs over a variety of levels. From what I have dug up on the title, it is a fast action game with a few types of planes, both fighter planes and bombers, which are used depending on your mission. The shooting and action can get very busy at times, with more than a few enemy planes or ground targets on screen at one time, ensuring there is plenty for the player to take care of and a great challenge. So if it’s a side scrolling shooter you are looking for, then this could be the one for you. Give it a wee look and see.

This one came out of nowhere, not only the demo but the game. It is based on the movie of the same name, which is all about owls just in case you did not know. So the game and the demo has the player taking control of an owl and fighting to defend all of owl kind in a battle against the evil Pure Ones. The player has total 360-degree control and combat system as they explore and fight throughout the landscape within the world of Ga’Hoole. This owl based aerial combat game looks like it may well be some fun, but again it is a game that came out of nowhere and is based on a movie – always an early warning. But you never really know when one of these turns out to be a good game and the chance is here now to find out with the demo. Grab it now if you are interested in the owl based combat.

This pack for the zombie killing spree game gives the games hero, Chuck, the abilities of a completely mindless psychotic when it comes to the zombie destroying skills. The costume gives chuck a couple of advantages, the first of which is a heightened resistance to damage. Secondly, and slightly high in the fun stakes, the costume give the player the ability to inflict more damage when it comes to the classic melee weapons such as knives and chainsaw, as well as some brand new killer moves for weapons such as the machete, meat cleaver and pickaxe. So if the zombie killing skills that are already in the game don’t quite cut it and you are feeling a little more crazy, then this could well be the pack for you.

TOM CLANCY’S H.A.W.X. 2 COLD WAR PACK £3.19/€3.99 & MIG ALLEY PACK £3.19/€3.99

Each of these new packs for the aerial combat game add two new planes and a game mode for the player to enjoy. The first pack, The Cold War Pack gives you two planes that clashed in the Vietnam War – the F-4E Phantom II and the MIG-21 Fishbed, which can be used in all the existing modes within the game. But there is also the new Team Battle Mission, Search And destroy which takes place amongst the Russian Mountainsides. The pack also includes new skins for both the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Thunderbolt II. The Mig Alley pack also offers two new planes, namely the F-86 Sabre and the MIG-15 Fagot and the new Trigger Happy Mode. There are also two new skins in this pack for the F-22 Raptor and the F-35B Lightning II. Pick these packs up if you want to increase your stable of planes within the game now.

Split Second, the high speed action packed racing game, gets some love this week in the shape of Survival At The Rock Pack, which features a brand new environment to be racing in. The new Minepit Park Quarry environment is, as you may expect it to be, a quarry. Along with the new visually stunning circuit for racing, the pack also gives you a brand new Survival game mode, ideal for honing your defensive driving skills. Perfect for those that are looking for a new challenge from the game.

WRC GROUP B CARS £3.99/€4.99

WRC 2010 is a relatively new game, one which I am hoping to have a review of on the site soon. But this early release of content is a welcome one, with the introduction of the classic but banned cars from the sport, thankfully not from the video game though. Due to the huge amounts of horsepower, they were involved in a few accidents. But it is nice to see them in the game. The new cars include the following: The Lancia Delta S4, Ford RS200, Citroen BX$ TC, Renault R5 Maxi Turbo and the Peugeot 205 T16. That’s five new cars for a relatively low price, ready for rally fans to pick up and play now.

MOTO GP 10 TWIN TRACK PACK £3.99/€4.99

The twin track pack for Moto GP 10 gives fans of the game two brand new tracks for their racing pleasure and they are pretty stunning recreations of a couple of real world tracks in Istanbul and Shanghai. These tracks will be available for players to run races offline and online, and also compete in time trials to reach the top of the online leader boards. Bored of racing the same old track? Then pick this up for a little more variation.

One of the original and favourite PSN games, Pain has been given a constant stream of content over the years and months that it has been on general release, be it original characters, or even celebrity characters putting in a guest appearance, the one thing fans of the game are always hungry for are new pain arenas and this week’s update offers one of those in the shape of the Alpine Ski slope. This is actually more of a ski resort, full of destructible items and structures to throw your human cannonball at, racking up huge combos and high scores all with a stupid grin plastered across your face as your human ammo screams, literally, through the scenery, taking out all sorts of snow and ski based scenery. Fans of the game, myself included, will be delighted at this new environment for the game.

Again it’s time to give you Eyepet some goodies. I do believe that both of these packs have been released on earlier dates. But if you missed them, then now is the perfect time to pick them up, especially the Halloween kit so you can dress up your EyePet to set the mood of the month. Or if you are a football, or soccer as some may say, then you can have your pet support along with you, with the Soccer Fan Styling Kit for our little virtual furry pets.
