3DS Lowdown from Amsterdam

Posted by GG Goblin On January - 19 - 2011

The big Nintendo 3DS preview event is currently in full swing and I am sure that there will be more than a few journalists waking up tomorrow morning with a sore head, and not just from the excessive alcohol that will be consumed tonight.

But the presentation is over and what did we learn? Well, apparently Jonathan Ross fancies himself as head of Nintendo Europe. Before I launch into a collection of quick hit info that came from the presentation, one thing that was sorely missing was the price. The US event, that was held simultaneously, revealed a price of $249.99. However, Europe still has no idea, which is a shame. Personally I would hope for less than £200, but we will have to wait and see. Anyway, here’s the info -

- Launch date confirmed for March 25th 2011

- Eurosport and possibly Sky will be providing 3D content in the near future

- Aardman are creating a collection of Shaun Sheep 3D shorts that can be viewed on the handheld

- Spot Pass will allow the 3DS to download content from suitable wifi hotspots automatically, even when in sleep mode

- Street Pass is optional, and allows the gamer to exchange gaming information whilst out and about, without any required interaction

- Friend codes return, but are assigned to each console rather than each game

- Super Street Fighter IV 3D will make use of Street Pass to engage in combat with other passing 3DS owners

- Gamers will be able to watch their friends Super Street Fighter IV 3D battles on their own handhelds

- PES 2011 3D will feature a “behind the player” camera view for added immersion

- 3DS will come pre-loaded with MiiMaker that will allow players to create Miis from photos

- Face Raiders will be preinstalled allowing players to take a photo and then shoot at it in a 3D shooting gallery

- There is a built in pedometer function, allowing gamers to exchange steps for Game Coins that can buy extra content in compatible games

- The Nintendo eShop and an internet browser will be available after launch through a system update

- After the launch, gamers will be able to transfer their DSiWare purchases from DSi and DSiXL

- The launch window, from March 25th to early June, will see more than 30 games including these from Nintendo:

— Pilotwings Resort

—Nintendogs + Cats

—Steel Diver

- Other games on the way include:

— Star Fox 64 3D

— Animal Crossing

— Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Edition

— The Sims 3

— Lego Star Wars III The Clone Wars

— Super Monkey Ball 3D

— Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

— Driver Renegade

— Rabbids 3D

- The 3DS will be available in two colours – Aqua Blue and Cosmos Black

I am sure that there will be more to come, but for the moment I am stuffed full of 3DS info.
