Yes, the site was down for a few hours this morning. Yes, it is back up and working as usual.
A couple of weeks back, GGUK suffered from nearly eight full days of downtime. This was a result of hosting problems and was eventually remedied by simply moving to a new host (I say simply, but the reality was anything but).
A huge thank you should go out to Seb and Dominic at Vidahost, our new hosts, for the epic amount of work they put into moving the site over and getting it back up and running properly. They should also be thanked for their efforts to get everyone back up and running this morning after an issue at the Datacentre resulted in the Fire Brigade being phones and a huge number of sites going down. This was completely out of Vidahost’s hands and there was nothing they could do about it but wait for the Datacentre technicians to solve the problem. Even so, Seb and Dominic did a great job of keeping everyone up to date via Twitter and the Vidahost forum, whilst answering the phone to the hundreds of webmasters who were freaking out.
The move to Vidahost was something that needed to happen to both cope with the growth of GGUK and to distance us from our previous, less than impressive host. Although there was a slight hiccup this morning, for which Vidahost were in no way responsible, we are confident that this was the right move and that Vidahost will be happily hosting GGUK for a long time to come.
