Take to the clouds as Mr. Cloud, the new iOS game from Ownage Studios.
There are a whole crowd of iOS games constantly sprinting forward in a race to be the best in what is a simple yet often maddeningly addictive genre: endless running games.
Mr Cloud is unlikely to finish with a medal, but its charming and cartoony gameplay will see it appeal to youngsters out there – and it’s a colourful and breezy change from all the zombies and monsters chasing the heroes of similar titles.
Controls are as simple as simple can be. Mr Cloud is constantly travelling across a cartoon landscape from left to right. Touching anywhere on the screen will cause him to rise in the sky; release your finger and he’ll drop back down again. You use this mechanic to weave him in and out of obstacles and bonuses as he streaks across the land in a quest to beat your latest high score.
As he progresses, Mr Cloud leaves a trail in his wake: initially white and featureless, this gets more colourful as you progress, until he is leaving a rainbow behind him as he munches on the candies, balloons and other items hanging in the sky.
Mr Cloud is actually more challenging than you at first expect, as the game is immediately over if you bash your little cumulonimbus into one of the many obstacles in your path. On your first few goes of the game, it’s actually quite hard to tell what is an obstacle and what’s simply background scenery – after that, you learn that merely bumping into a fellow cloud or a towering castle in the air will send you plummeting down to earth.
Even though he’s made of water vapour, there’s not a lot of substance Mr Cloud, beyond trying to beat the high score and rack up some combos by passing through floating rings. The cartoony style makes it a good choice for younger gamers, but even they will soon tire of Mr Cloud’s capers and look for something a little more solid.
Mr. Cloud is available on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad, free of charge.
