Only in The Simpsons…
In the latest episode of The Simpsons to air in America, Season 23 Episode 5, Homer rewards Bart and Lisa by taking them on a fun day out to E4 – the Expensive Electronic Entertainment Expo. As you can imagine, the humorous parodies were plentiful.
They began with an Angry Birds style live action game being played outside the Expo, labeled as Furious Fliers. But once inside, video game industry references were everywhere.
The big three got teasingly renamed as Funtendo, who were about to launch their new, suspiciously tablet-like console – The Zii-Zu, GameStation, with their GameStation 3, and Ybox displaying the Ybox360. Even Apple didn’t escape the ribbing with a Mapple stand proudly on display. There were also displays from publishers such as Protovision, Electronic Crafts and Nokami.
But what would a video games Expo be without video games. Jalo, World of Krustcraft, Dig Dug Revelations, Q-Bert: Origins, Shaun White: Time Snowboarder, Drivers License 2: License to Drive and Assassin’s Creed: Summer of Love featuring a hippy Ezio, were all on display. Bart spent a few minutes playing Guts of War II: Entrails of Intestinox and completed it, much to the dismay of the developer who had sacrificed his marriage for this game.
Springfield’s very own LEGO rip off was also present. BLOCKO had two games that we could see, BLOCKO: Cosmic Wars and BLOCKO: Angelica Button (a strangely familiar wizard child). Human Centipede was a game that obviously combined the gameplay from the classic Centipede with the notoriously gross horror movie. There was also a showing from what I assume was an MMORPG in the shape of Earthland Realms 2: The Outing of the Elves and what would undoubtedly be the greatest FPS game ever – Medal of Duty.
The UK are a couple of weeks behind the US when it comes to new episodes of The Simpsons, but keep your eyes on the listings – you won’t want to miss this episode!
