Last night Xbox Live operators Microsoft were investigating cyber thefts as the latest ‘phishing con‘, which involved emails being sent to players offering them free Microsoft points.
Victims then entered personal details, which allowed criminals access accounts and credit card information. Thefts of small amounts from credit cards have happened over the last few weeks, making them very difficult to detect. It’s also be noted that victims have lost money when passwords were accessed. Con-men also befriend players online and trick them into volunteering personal details. The latest victim was Paul Thompson, 29 of Essex where hackers stole £84. Microsoft will offer refunds, if users prove they did not reveal passwords. The average loss to gamers in 35 countries hit by the scam is around £100, but many lost £200.
