A Mechromantic at heart

Posted by ShapeThrower On October - 25 - 2012

So… Those ace chaps (and chapettes) over at Gearbox have given us Borderlands fans a new character class to rampage around Pandora with, the Mechromancer (or Gaige to her friends).

The question is, is she any good? Well that depends on what you make of her action skill – summoning a hefty robotic pal called Deathtrap, who then proceeds to make a beeline to the enemies and start dishing out the pain. Whilst Deathtrap’s doing his thing (well I’m presuming it’s a he) then you get to hang back with your weapon of choice and aid the destruction. With a timer associated with his summoning (like the commando’s turret) and the ability to attack multiple targets, summoning Deathtrap is a handy skill to have.

After spending a few hours in the company of Gaige and Deathtrap I think I’ve found a new favourite character type, offering something of benefit to both the skilled and unskilled player alike.

For those that don’t know what they’re doing, calling up your robotic death dispenser and letting it run wild gives you that little window to gather your thoughts when the going gets crazy, select a weapon and get stuck back in to fray. For the more savvy player what you get access to is a backup buddy with a highly complex bonus stacking system.

Don’t believe me, read through the skill tree for Ordered Chaos. Essentially the more ammo you blast through, the more rewards you get with damage bonuses percentages heading to triple figures in a big way.

Playing solo I found that the Little Big Trouble skill tree was most useful with lots of bonuses to area damage and elemental damage chances going way way up as well. This to me turned Deathtrap into more of a team mate than just a skill I had.

I had great fun playing as Gaige and urge you to give this new class a try, whether you’re just starting to explore the goodies that Pandora has locked away in it’s caverns and settlements, or an old hand making a run at Vault Hunter mode.

Remember if you pre-ordered the game and got access to the premiere club then she’s free to you. Just make sure you use the download content option from the game menu and not the appropriate store for your platform of choice.
