Circle Pad Pro XL

Posted by GG Goblin On April - 26 - 2013

The easiest way to add an extra slider pad to your 3DS XL.

With the recent release of the Circle Pad Pro XL in the UK and US, owners of the larger 3DS XL can now enjoy the benefits of two slider pads. Whilst this won’t revolutionize their videogaming, it certainly makes life easier for the few games that support this peripheral, specifically Monster Hunter Ultimate – The game is massively improved with the second slider. So let’s take a look at this latest hunk of plastic…

Powered by a single AAA battery, which lasts forever by the way, the Circle Pad Pro XL snugly holds your 3DS XL, giving access to the power connector, volume control and headphone socket (but not the stylus, so make sure you take it out before attaching the Circle Pad Pro XL). It feels very solid once the 3DS XL is in place, and the plastic is molded to feel comfortable and secure in the hands.

The unit not only adds a second slider pad, found on the right hand side of the 3DS XL, but also a pair of left and right trigger buttons, labeled as ZL and ZR. These are perfectly positioned for use. There is also an R button to replace the one on the 3DS XL which is no longer really accessible with the Circle Pad Pro XL attached. It has to be said that the L button, which has not been replaced, is a little bit more difficult to press, but it is nothing that can’t be adjusted to. It’s a small price to pay for that second slider.

There is not really much else to say about the Circle Pad Pro XL. It does what it needs to do. It is solid and well made. The only real issue that many will have with the unit is how big it makes the 3DS XL, a handheld that is already fairly huge, and how it make the 3DS XL look less visually appealing. Some may even say it is ugly.

So, it is not the most attractive piece of kit ever made, but the Circle Pad Pro XL is well built and functions exactly how it should. For Monster Hunter fans, this is an essential purchase, but other gamers should also consider picking one up as the Circle Pad Pro XL improves any game that supports it.
