It was reported yesterday on VentureBeat that EA have decided to drop online passes for future games.
The highly controversial online pass, which forces gamers buying pre-owned games to pay extra for online features, seems to have been dropped by EA.
Quoted from VentureBeat:
“Yes, we’re discontinuing Online Pass,” EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg confirmed to GamesBeat in an e-mail. “None of our new EA titles will include that feature.”
“Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format,” Reseburg said. “We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”
Many gamers have suggested that the decision to drop the online pass by EA could be due to the next Xbox console restricting games to a single console, thus making the online pass pointless. However, the details of the new Xbox have not yet been revealed, so we will have to wait on that one. And let’s see if other publishers follow suit and drop the online pass.
