Can Ubisoft replicate the excitement of last year’s Watch_Dogs surprise announcement at their E3 press conference this year?
Well, it would be a tall order as the hype surrounding the awesome looking Watch_Dogs is immense. But it ain’t over until the fat Rabbid sings, as they say.
Ubisoft kicked things off with Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell rocking his guitar on stage before showing off the voice commands and virtual jamming in Rocksmith 2014 Edition – the easiest way to learn guitar apparently. What followed next were some impressive videos for games that we already know plenty about. Splinter Cell Blacklist, which is coming on August 20th, and the slow to arrive Rayman Legends, due September 3rd, both got the video treatment. We then had some humour announcing the open beta for The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot and some martial art style farting in South Park – The Stick of Truth.
I will admit that I was starting to panic at this point, but then something magical happened – a new game. The Crew, which is coming in 2014, is a driving game with a persistent online world in which players can enjoy all different types of driving across all different types of terrains, and form crews with friends to take on difficult missions or events. The game will feature an in-depth car customisation system which can also be enjoyed on a tablet. And it looked incredible.
The Watch_Dogs CGI video that we uploaded earlier was then shown to the E3 audience, followed by some party game action being provided by Just Dance 2014, the latest entry in the the popular party/dancing series which is due this October.
I then got to scream “Bwaaah!” at the top of my voice, much to the distress of those around me, as Rabbids Invasion was announced. Not just a new game, this is in fact an interactive TV show in which the viewers can play short mini games as part of their viewing experience. It has Rabbids, what more do you need to know?
We then launched into two absolutely gorgeous Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag trailers. The first was the standard CGI experience, but the second trailer actually had some gameplay footage. We need to see the game in action Ubisoft!
Getting close to the end now and it seems like it’s Trials time. Not one but two new Trials games are on the way. Trials Frontier coming to iOS and Android devices, and Trials Fusion coming to PC, Xbox360, Xbox One and PS4, and they both look totally insane.
Then, with their very last reveal, Ubisoft pull it out of the bag by announcing Tom Clancy’s The Division. A new online open-world RPG experience set more or less in the present day after an outbreak of some sort. The video shows the game being played, including one player joining in on a tablet, and it looks incredible. Tom Clancy’s The Division, by Massive Entertainment, may not be due until next year, but it certainly looks like a game to get hyped about.
And so the Ubisoft press conference finished, and it finished well.
