A day filled with Golden Joysticks.
It was another stunning and successful year for The Golden Joystick Awards this year, held at the prestigious Westminster Bridge Plaza Hotel and presented by Green Man Gaming. Hundreds of developers, publishers and video game industry people gathered together to celebrate the 31st annual ceremony of everything we know and love from the world of video game entertainment. A record breaking 10 million votes were submitted this year, making it the world’s most popular and influential awards of all time.
GirlGamers UK had the opportunity to celebrate this momentous day from start to finish and watched on as the celebrations commenced. At midday, everyone was invited to a champagne reception, where video game industry people flocked together with a glass of champagne and enjoyed the next generation PlayStation 4 consoles, which were positioned around the outside of the reception area for pure video game entertainment pleasure. Once champagne had been drunk, people were then escorted to the main ballroom area for lunch. Press media were given their own lunch in the independent media room, which was well stocked with food, wine and other refreshments to keep our strength up for the long day. The room even had its own PS4, so everyone was kept entertained.
At around 3pm, press are then ushered to the allocated seats, and the ceremony commenced. Each year that we’ve attended the Golden Joystick Awards, the ceremony seems to go quicker and quicker. I’m not sure whether people are spending less time accepting awards and making speeches, or if everyone is in a rush to get to the after party, but it’s a rather quick ceremony. We had the pleasure of watching Ed Byrne start the awards with his usual witty banter and nerdy excitement, while playing around with the free green goo given out by Green Man Gaming.
The 31st Annual Golden Joystick Awards incorporated some new categories including a special Lifetime Achievement award and a Hall of Fame category. Ken Levine, BioShock Creative Director and Co-Founder of Irrational Games, won the Lifetime Achievement award.
We had an opportunity to throw questions at him in a special Q&A panel, which was hosted for press after the main ceremony. Also available for questioning were UK MD Roy Stackhouse and UK Marketing Director David Tyler from the Call of Duty franchise, which won the Hall of Fame category, Mark Turpin for YouTube Gamer winner Yogscast, and the two voice actors Troy Baker and Roger Craig Smith who who voiced Batman and The Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. Check out the video we recorded during these sessions –
After the Q&A, press have the chance to write up the winners back at the independent media room, ready to be released to the general public. It’s a chance to take a breather after the main ceremony and get your thoughts as well as your equipment together. At around five o’clock, the after show party begins and the drinks continue to flow. Yes, the drinks started flowing at midday, hence the reason that most of the people that have been there all day don’t hang around until late. During the after show party, it’s a good time to network, meet some interesting people from all areas of the video games industry, as well as enjoy the music, the crazy dancing, the odd glass of champagne and occasionally being snapped performing some silly poses with friends.
The Golden Joystick Awards are there to celebrate the best of the industry, and they do it so well. But they also serve to bring together the people of this industry that we all love being a part of. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Future Publishing for inviting us year after year, to what is the most influential video game awards on the planet.
