Lara Croft, one of the most iconic and recognisable characters in gaming and film, is to be bestowed the honour of being entered into the  Golden Joystick Awards Hall Of Fame.

An honour reserved only for the true behemoths in the world of gaming, the Golden Joystick Hall of Fame is only open to those games and characters that have changed the face of gaming and become an absolute global phenomena. It is hard to argue that there is any one character who has done this more than  Lara Croft.

2016 is the 20th anniversary of TOMB RAIDER, the game that catapulted Lara Croft to the iconic figure that she is today. One of the most revered gaming series ever, it has sold over 46 million copies and the brand has seen multiple spin offs including animation series, comics, worldwide blockbuster films (played by A list actors such as Angelina Jolie) and even two albums!

Since her first appearance in 1996 in the original Tomb Raider from Core Design, Lara Croft has trekked more than 25 countries and revolutionised the way the gaming community perceives lead characters in video games. Lara is an intrepid, empowered adventurer who must rely on her skills and intelligence not only to unravel ancient mysteries but also to survive in the most treacherous environments.

Dan Dawkins, Global Editor in Chief of GamesRadar+ says, “Lara Croft is one of gaming’s most iconic characters, the figurehead of PlayStation’s explosion into mainstream culture in the mid 90s and truly deserving of a place in the Hall of Fame

“The past 20 years has seen Lara become a household name and one of the most inspiring and influential female characters ever. Most impressively, the character has evolved over the decades, with Lara’s recent, more realistic, reboot more closely aligned with modern gamer’s attitudes; allied to a game-design that continues to be best in class. We would like to congratulate all of the teams behind Lara over the past 20 years for their achievements.”
