Puyo Puyo Tetris

Posted by GG Goblin On May - 3 - 2017

Puyos and tetrominos all in one place.

While mobile platforms may have an abundance of quick hit puzzle games, on the main consoles they are few and far between. When they do turn up, they tend to be a re-hash of classic, established puzzle games with a twist and a new coat of paint. While the new Puyo Puyo Tetris from SEGA, which is available for both the PS4 and Nintendo Switch, isn’t really anything new, it does manage to successfully combine two of the greatest puzzle game franchises of all time, and that makes it something really special.

While the odd five or ten minute play session of a puzzle game during a bus journey or whatever may seem like a bit of time wasting compared to a mammoth game session at home exploring a new fantasy world, or racing along virtual roads, the accessibility and instant gratification of puzzle games can lead to an equally in-depth and lengthy sessions, and Puyo Puyo Tetris is very easy to lose time to.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is more themed around the Puyo Puyo games, a series that has been around for ages and involves matching little Puyos of different colours as they fall from the top of the screen. It is in the Adventure Mode that this is most apparent, with a colourful cast of characters that mostly come from the Puyo games. There is even a story involving the Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds merging and it falling to a group of enthusiastically voiced characters to prevent this from happening. It’s all a bit silly, but works great as a vehicle to introduce players to all of the different modes. There is also plenty of challenge here, as the matches have goals to complete which will lead to players constantly coming back to try and achieve missed stars.

Over the years, I have played plenty of both Tetris and Puyo Puyo games. However, it didn’t take long before I found myself struggling to proceed in the Adventure Mode. The basics of both games are fairly simple, fill lines of match groups of four of the same colour to remove them. However, there are a lot of advanced techniques that come into play when competing against another player, either real or AI. Fortunately there are a raft of tutorials that will teach new players how to compete, and even give veteran masters of either series some new tricks to employ.

With tutorials available and an Adventure Mode to provide introductions to the games various different ways of playing, players should be well prepared for the massive number of modes available to play against others. The game supports both local and online play, and up to four players, or a combination of players and AI, can sink there teeth into all manner of different types of match, with plenty of options to customise the games to their taste.

Basic competitive matches of both Tetris and Puyo Puyo are available, along with a Party Mode which mixes things up by adding in power ups. There are a bunch of challenges for the single player to get involved with, challenging the player to clear a set number of Tetris lines or dealing with smaller Puyos for example. The challenges alone are plenty to keep the average puzzle gamer busy for hours. Big Bang, which presents players with set patterns to complete, and Swap, which switches between Tetris and Puyo boards, offer something a little different. However, the most unique mode comes in the form of Fusion, which combines both games in a brand new way. Both Puyos and Tetriminos fall from the top of the board, creating an incredibly confusing game to begin with, but one that provides so much frantic fun.

Both the Puyo Puyo and Tetris games are old now, but Puyo Puyo Tetris brings something new to the table. Both veterans of either series and newcomers are made welcome here, and the range of different modes and mass of content will ensure that there is plenty to entertain for many hours. Whether you are looking for a relaxing puzzle game or a competitive experience, Puyo Puyo Tetris has what you need and is a great addition to any gamers collection.
