TVPlayer On Xbox One

Posted by GG Goblin On June - 7 - 2017

What to do when you don’t want to play games on your Xbox One.

Video games are great, but they are not the only form of entertainment out there. While playing the latest blockbuster shooter or obscure indie game is a good way to spend a few hours, there often comes a time when you need a break, or when other household members demand their TV back. The console makers realized this a while back and so consoles have moved from being dedicated gaming machines to full on entertainment hubs. With the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime allowing the streaming of their select stable of TV shows and movies, and services such as BBC iPlayer offering a more dedicated selection of shows available on demand, there really is plenty to watch on your console. The problem is, what if you don’t know what you want to watch? There have been plenty of times when I have had a spare hour and then spent that hour browsing shows and movies rather than watching them. This is where live TV is king.

Here in the UK we have a great selection of TV channels that are available to view for free, not counting the TV license of course. Some of these “freeview” channels are available to watch live on the Xbox One through the various dedicated apps, but there are still plenty that would have previously required a separate TV box, or a TV with a built in service. I, for one, love the idea of all of my entertainment in one place, and that is much more possible now with TVPlayer on Xbox One. Jumping from exploring an alien world to watching the latest episode of a hyped TV drama as it airs without even putting down my controller sounds like my idea of bliss.

TVPlayer offers a massive number of channels for free, from the British stalwarts such as BBC One and ITV, to the more specialist channels like Clubland and Heart for music fans, and various QVC channels for shoppers. There are some 60 odd channels to browse through covering the majority of the free channels in the UK. The interface is bright and straight forward, making swapping between channels nice and easy.

However, TVPlayer doesn’t stop there. Through TVPlayer Plus, a subscription service costing £5.99 a month, Xbox One owners can also access a further 24 premium channels, including the likes of Discovery, National Geographic and MTV. There is also a catch-up service which offers a vast range of shows that users can watch exactly when they want to, for those who are far too busy to watch live shows. The £5.99 price tag comes with no contract, so users can cancel whenever they want, and is comparable in price to other services that perhaps offer less.

The way people watch TV has changed dramatically over the last few years, with live TV falling to the wayside as people watch their favorite shows whenever they want on their tablets or mobile devices. But there is always a time to gather around the TV and watch events as they happen, be they exciting drama, the latest news as it unfolds, or simply to find out the winner of a talent show at the same time as everyone else.

TVPlayer is a great service that has been available for a while on various devices, such as iOS and Android. In April, the service landed on Xbox One and has already proved to be very popular. For those who want their Xbox One to be a full entertainment hub, TVPlayer brings that dream closer to reality. Using the app is intuitive, the selection of free channels is great, and the premium service is well worth the money for what you get.
