Overcooked! 2: Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC

Posted by GG Goblin On October - 18 - 2018

Relaxing in the sun? Not a chance.

When it was announced that Ghost Town Games’ chaotic co-op title Overcooked! 2 was getting some DLC, my heart sank. This would mean I would have to find some friends who haven’t already refused to play Overcooked! 2 with me, which is a tall order. But then I saw the title, Surf ‘n’ Turf, and started to feel a little better. I imagined sun, sandy beaches, and maybe even drinks with little umbrellas in them. That doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

Those who haven’t played Overcooked! 2, the concept is quite simple. For the most part, although other play options are available, two players will team up to run a kitchen in less than ideal conditions, as they try to complete orders and get awarded stars before moving on to the next kitchen. The evil genius of Overcooked! 2 comes from what happens outside of the game. It is all about cooperation and communication, and if you happen to get one player who complains loudly when the other is not washing up plates, or actually screams when they get hit by a potato, well, things can get a bit tense. The game borders between the most fun you can have, and the perfect culinary storm for driving friends away.

So who wouldn’t want more of that? The Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC brings a whole bunch of new content to the game, ensuring that players can feel warm and fuzzy while falling out with their friends.

The cute silliness of the main game returns, as the Onion King has now been exiled to what can only be described as a beach resort, a result of him raising the Unbread in the main games story. I am not entirely sure why he would want to return, but he does, and it is down to a tough team of cooks to master a selection of new recipes and conditions across three new worlds in order to make that happen.

Offered separately from the main game, Surf ‘n’ Turf gives players three new worlds to travel across, each with four new levels. It is very much a continuation from the main game, in that players are expected to know what to do. The DLC doesn’t pull its punches and drops the player into hot water from the go, especially for players that are trying to get that elusive fourth star which has been added to the levels.

The new levels all have a sunny disposition, offering a familiar set up of various work stations and equipment, along with all new hazards, such as waves on the beach causing the layout to change. Those who have played the main game, and why wouldn’t you have if you are considering this DLC, will know that each level will come with its own complication, designed to make players change their tactics and communicate if they have any chance of getting dishes out.

When it comes to the new stuff added to further complicate the players lives, perhaps the most notable is the water pistol. This handy little device may seem like a blessing, with it being able to wash dishes and put out fires. However, the fact that it has a free aim means that it can cause as much damage as it prevents, especially if the player using it happens to spray their colleague, maybe even knocking them out of bounds.

Aside from the pistol, there is also a set of bellows that need to be used with the BBQ in order to get dishes cooked quicker. When it comes to new recipes, smoothies seem to be the order of the day, with a wide variety of different fruits to use. There are also kebabs to deal with, and some twists on classic recipes, such as having double patties in a burger, so players will have to keep their wits about them and watch for when the game throws a curve ball.

The Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC doesn’t wander far from the formula set in the main game, which is no bad thing. Instead, it offers more of the same crazy gameplay, with a few little twists to keep things fresh. There is no denying that Overcooked! 2 is one of the best co-op party games around at the moment, and the Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC just expands it further. If you still have friends that will play Overcooked! 2 with you, then picking up the Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC is well worth the low cost.
