Scribblenauts Mega Pack

Posted by GG Goblin On October - 3 - 2018

All the Scribblenauts you could ever need.

Scribblenauts Showdown was a fun little party game in its own right, but failed to be the content-packed creative tour of the imagination that the previous Scribblenauts games had been. Realising that the new generation of consoles, including the mighty Nintendo Switch, needed a proper Scribblenauts game, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment looked to the past and bundled the best Scribblenauts games for players to enjoy. Or maybe they were just looking through their back catalogue to see what games they could port to the Switch, and the other current gen consoles, to make some more cash. Either way, I am more than happy to be able to play the Scribblenauts Mega Pack on Nintendo Switch.

The Scribblenauts Mega Pack is, as the name suggests, a pack that brings together two previously available games into one Scribblenauts super title. Scribblenauts Unlimited and the licensed Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure are the two games included, bringing with them huge amount of content that will keep the most imaginative players bust for hours to come.

The key mechanic in both games, and indeed in all of the Scribblenauts games, is that the player is able to type in pretty much any word and have the corresponding item appear on screen, to be used. This not only includes simple names, such as ladder or flower, but adjectives as well, allowing the player to tweak everything they create. Even back in the first Scribblenauts game, it was impressive just how big the games’ dictionary of words was. In these two titles, the dictionary is absolutely massive and the player will be hard pressed to find things that are not included. Obviously, unlicensed objects will not be available, and there is a strict ban on naughty adult words, but otherwise the only real limit is the players imagination. Words are put into the game using a “sunflower” text entry system which works well, especially as like predictive text the game will come up with suggestions based on the letters already put in.

So, how does this work? Well, starting in Scribblenauts Unlimited, players take on the role of Maxwell who happens to have a magical notepad in which he can write a name and that object will appear in the game. For the purposes of story, his sister Lily has been cursed and it is up to Maxwell to roam the world and collect Starites in order to help her.

In practice, this means entering a side scrolling platform level and pretty much trying to help out the numerous NPCs with whatever problem they have. There is an obvious leaning towards the younger players here, with cutesy graphics and silly situations, but there is also plenty to enjoy as an older gamer. Much of that enjoyment comes from creatively solving the puzzles. While many of these puzzles come from the NPCs and seem to have quite simple solutions, given that the player can magically produce pretty much anything, but then the players solution may not work and they will then have to start thinking outside of the box to really get the solution. And of course they can also inject a little of their own imagination into the solution by tweaking the objects, and there are often plenty of different ways to solve a puzzle or get past a problem. For example, if faced by an enemy, maybe an alien or something, the player may need a weapon. They could choose a sword or gun, and both will be suitable using the games simple combat mechanics. But would it not be more fun to make a flame thrower, a rocket launched, or maybe a tank? How about an attack helicopter? The player is only limited by their vocabulary and imagination, which does make the game great for younger children, or for playing with a group.

There are a couple of extra levels added to the game over the original release, and there is a two player mode to enjoy with a friend. But the most important inclusion for this Mega Pack is a whole other game.

Scribblenauts Unmasked is more of the same, but with the most comprehensive DC Comics flavour ever seen in a video game. The levels are more action oriented this time around and players will be collecting reputation points. But the real stars are the locations and the massive cast of DC characters to be found and enjoyed in the game.

Think you know your DC super heroes and villains? I can pretty much guarantee that in Scribblenauts Unmasked there will be at least a couple that you have never heard of. The library of characters is absolutely huge, and I mean thousands here, making the game an absolute joy for any comic book fans. From Batman and Superman, though to the likes of Gentleman Ghost and Ocean Master, the list is massive. There have even been some new characters added for this version of the game that didn’t appear in the original. Even more exciting is the ability to make your own hero, combining features of different heroes if you wish, to come up with your own dream hero. It is great stuff.

This time around, Maxwell and Lily are stuck in the DC universe, unable to get home, and so must enlist the help of Batman and buddies as they head through various DC locations, such as Gotham and Metropolis in their quest to get home. For a comic book fan, this is pure nectar. But even the younger players who have maybe less interest in comics will still appreciate the gorgeous cute visuals and the use of imagination. For the Mega Pack version of the game, another couple of levels have been included, taking the player to Titans Tower and Belle Reve.

The Scribblenauts games have always been unlike any others, offering a well polished and imaginative experience that is truly unique. With the Scribblenauts Mega Pack, players get two excellent games with an abundance of content. While the Unmasked game will be more appreciated by comic book fans, it is impossible to deny the charm and creativity in both titles. For something a little different, and a whole lot of fun, pick up the Scribblenauts Mega Pack on Switch.
