Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Legacy Of The First Blade – Episode 2

Continuing the Odyssey.

Ubisoft dropped the second episode of the Legacy of the First Blade DLC, titled Shadow Heritage, into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, for those with the Season Pass or buying the entire story arc as a pack, and while certain decisions in this episode may have caused some controversy, there is no denying that more content in an already packed game is a good thing. As with the first episode, players will have had to complete chapter 7 of the main game in order to hop into this story.

This time around, our hero, be they Alexios or Kassandra, leave the northern region of Makedonia, the setting for episode one: Hunted, and head to the western land of Achaia. Once again the player will be aiding Darius and dealing with yet more masked villains through a few hours of gameplay that are more or less what we come to expect from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, albeit with perhaps more focus on the naval combat this time around.

This time around, Darius, and his son or daughter, depending on the players character, have got themselves caught up with helping the locals, which for the player will mean a whole bunch of new masked enemies to unmask and execute, and a new big bad in the form of a naval captain known as The Tempest.

While the gameplay doesn’t really offer anything new, not that this will be a problem for the fans of Odyssey, the narrative side of this episode is really well done. Following on from the first episode, Hunted, players will get to learn more about not only the infamous Darius, and his offspring, but also about their own hero in some touching scenes. The arrival of a baby however, something which was necessary from a narrative point of view, really does throw the cat among the pigeons as it removes any illusion of choice from the player, something which Odyssey has always been very proud to offer. Personally, I wasn’t phased by this outcome, but I can understand how many players who had made the most of the games’ apparent freedom would be taken aback. Ubisoft have already said that they will address the issue, although I doubt that will mean much to the players that have completed the DLC and have been offended.

Anyway, controversy aside, Shadow Heritage is another couple of hours of classic Assassin’s Creed Odyssey gameplay that is truly welcome. To complement the great gameplay, the DLC will also give the player some more legendary gear upon completion, including the Judgement of the Lion weapon that will give the player health upon a successful parry. There is also a new Hunter ability called Rapid Fire that allows the player to channel their inner Legolas, which is always nice. However, the most significant bonus for this DLC comes in the form of a flame thrower that can be mounted on the players ship. I have always quite enjoyed the naval battles in Odyssey, but having the Chimera mounted to the front of the ship really does ramp up the fun.

The Legacy of the First Blade story arc is all about tying Odyssey in with the central Assassin’s Creed lore, and the first two episodes have already laid the groundwork for what I would hope will be an epic concluding segment when episode three releases. Neither of these two episodes have offered any substantial changes to the Odyssey formula, which is pretty much fins as the game is already highly enjoyable. The narrative error may have caused offence, but I really think that Ubisoft will have learned their lesson and won’t make that type of mistake again. It will be good to see how the story arc concludes, and then I guess we are heading off to Atlantis, like you do.

Legacy of the First Blade: Shadow Heritage is another solid DLC episode for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. While there may be no great changes to the gameplay, and the narrative may have some issues for some players, anyone who is a fan of the game will get more of what they enjoy and a great little pocket of story. Can’t wait for the final episode!
