Dragon Slay Pro-Hex Thumb Grips

Posted by GG Goblin On April - 23 - 2019

Bucket seats for your thumbs.

For most gamers, the standard controller that ships with their console will be ample to see them through most adventures. Many will never even consider anything other than the controller that came with their new console, and may well last out until the next generation of consoles comes along. Some may need to buy a new controller to replace a broken one, but even then they will mostly be the standard controllers. These controllers are great at what they do, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be better.

Replacement grips for the thumb sticks on controllers have been around for a while now, and the reasons for using them are varied. It could be that the rubber has worn out on the users favourite controller, and a pair of thumb grips offers a cheap repair. Or perhaps the user just wants a little bit of individuality, or the chance to improve their game. Whatever their reason for wanting thumb grips, gamers will have plenty of choice. GGUK have spent the last couple of weeks using the Dragon Slay Pro-Hex Thumb Grips, so let’s have a look…

First of all, the Dragon Slay Pro-Hex Thumb Grips are available for both the official Xbox One and PS4 controllers, priced on Amazon at £10.49, and come as a pack of four. This is not simple generosity though, as each pack ships with two classic height grips and two tall grips, giving players a choice. The packaging is nice and simple, although there is something very important on the back that I will get to soon.

As you may have guessed from the Pro-Hex name, these thumb grips are hexagonal in shape. They look nice, with one of each size being black and the other orange, so they also add a little colour to the controller. The material they are made of is less rubbery than many of the grips I have tried, which does suggest that they will last longer than most. They are covered with little bobbles to give extra purchase, and they each have a scoop running through the middle to give the thumb somewhere comfortable to settle. The scoop is not so deep that it becomes a hindrance when having to quickly move away from the stick, but seems just the right depth to feel natural.

Now, anyone who has used thumb grips before will know that half of the fun is actually fitting them. They are either easy to fit on, and thus will likely come off during a particularly heavy gaming session, or they are absolute devils. The Pro-Hex Thumb Grips are very tricky to fit, especially if the coating on your thumb sticks is already damaged. The upside of this is that, once they are on, they should not be going anywhere in a hurry. When it comes to the fitting though, it is worth noting that the scoop on the Pro-Hex Thumb Grips should be positioned diagonally, allowing the thumb to naturally settle in the recess. This may sound obvious, but all of the online pictures I have seen for the grips show them as fitted vertically, which would prove very uncomfortable. On the back of the packaging, there is a small illustration showing the correct alignment, but it is easy to overlook.

In use, they feel great. While I am not entirely sold on the idea that certain thumb grips will vastly improve a players game, the scoop and dimples on the Pro-Hex Thumb Grips do seem to give extra control and thus more accuracy. More importantly though, they feel natural to use and very comfortable. Even after sweaty game sessions, they maintain their grip and keep the thumb on the stick. On top of all that, I am pretty sure they will never be coming off my controllers.

There is not much that can be said about a pair of pads that basically fit onto the thumb stick of a controller. The Dragon Slay Pro-Hex Thumb Grips are well designed and well made. They feel comfortable and, while tricky to fit, won’t be coming off in a hurry. There is a lot of choice when it comes to thumb grips, from weird shapes to gaudy colours, but the more serious gamer would do well to consider the Dragon Slay Pro-Hex Thumb Grips. Will they turn you into an elite gamer? Probably not. But they will give you that little bit more control, and they look pretty good too.

Dragon Slay Pro-Hex Thumb Grips are available on Amazon for PS4 and Xbox One.
