The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle

Posted by GG Goblin On June - 23 - 2020

Save the Sims, save the world.

Eco living is a hot trend at the moment, and while it may not be everyone’s cup of responsibly sourced tea with almond milk in the real world, there is no reason why Sims gamers shouldn’t try to make the world a better place for their little families in The Sims 4. Have your Sims make a difference in The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle expansion pack.

Sims fans who lamented leaving their engorged copies of The Sims 3 behind are fairly well catered for now with Eco Lifestyle being the ninth expansion pack, meaning there is plenty of content to keep players happy. While not all expansions are created equal, they all bring something new to the Sims table. However, this latest expansion mixes things up more than most by offering some consequence to how the player chooses to let their Sims live.

With Eco Lifestyle, almost all of the neighbourhoods have their own Eco rating, ranging from Green through Neutral to Industrial depending on the way the residents live. The effect of this status is mostly cosmetic, with piles of trash and such, but Industrial neighbourhoods are smoggy and will cause Sims to cough, while the Green neighbourhoods are, well, happier places to be. The good news is that players will be able to work towards changing the status of their own neighbourhood through a little work on their own lifestyle and that of their neighbours.

This latest expansion really embraces the save the planet lifestyle, and as such there are many different ways in which the game has changed to emphasise that saving the world shouldn’t be that difficult. Even at the most basic level, the player is able now to choose where their power comes from, and going off grid is a real possibility. Wind turbines and solar panels can provide power, although whether it will be enough to keep the lights on all day is another matter. It is even possible to collect rain water to keep the toilet flushing, and all of this will have an effect on that eco status. Recycling and upcycling are the buzz words, with everything from flooring to furniture potentially causing more pollution. However, going dumpster diving not only reduces the potential pollution, but can also lead to all manner of goodies that the player can use to fill their homes on the cheap. Diving in the dumpster could even lead to a tasty meal, if that is your thing. For the real green Sims, there are even shipping container houses and roof gardens for growing food. Throw in a bug farm and Sims will be living the happy eco lifestyle.

New community lots are the perfect place for Sims to gather, and can become fun places such as markets or communal gardens. Being around other Sims is more important than ever in Eco Lifestyle because to change the whole neighbourhood, Sims will have to befriend their neighbours. The Neighbourhood Action Plan feature offers a new way for Sims in the same neighbourhood to come together and vote on various ways to improve, or change, their surroundings. Players wanting a certain outcome to these votes, and some of them are quite bizarre, will need to have friends willing to vote the same way, which is quantified through Influence Points. It is a great way of making neighbourhoods feel more involved and building a community.

Probably the most exciting aspect of any expansion is a new town for Sims to move into. Eco Lifestyle introduces Evergreen Harbour which provides three different neighbourhoods, each at a different eco status. As always, the town has its own charm, but it really shows off the different effects of pollution to encourage the player to go green. Good news for apartment fans in that the town even has a couple of new, if slightly small, apartments for Sims to move into should they desire.

As always, Create-A-Sim has been expanded with loads more content for making Sims. Following the theme of the expansion, new hairstyles, piercings and even facial hair has a slightly more “eco warrior” look. The variety is nice and should cater to anyone’s taste. The new clothes are a little more questionable though, with lots of denim and obvious recycling involved. Still, those wanting to embrace their inner hippy will I am sure find something they like. New traits, such as Recycle Disciple, will make the most of Eco Lifestyles new features, and a pair of new careers will allow the Sims to at least move in the right direction as they make their Simoleons.

Of course, players are still able to live their Sim lives exactly how they want. With this expansion though, working hard to eventually afford the biggest TV and fanciest house possible is still well and good as long as the player understands that their house may get doused in acid rain and all of the neighbours will be miserable. Along side the new clothes, hairstyles, jobs and town, Eco Lifestyle will give players new choices to make in the stories of their Sims and builds on the core gameplay. The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle is a game changing expansion that will keep Sims fans busy through sunshine and smog.
