Star Renegades Preview

Spending some time with the tactical squad-based rogue-lite RPG.

 
Massive Damage, those of Halcyon 6 fame, have just recently announced that their next title, Star Renegades, will be heading to Steam on September 8th, before making its way onto consoles later in the Autumn. After having spent a short time with a preview build of Star Renegades, it seems like now would be a perfect time to give our impressions of the tactical rogue-lite RPG.

 


 
The Star Renegades preview that we spent time with was very limited, but did a great job of introducing us to some of the features. While it didn’t reveal the full story for the game, there was a nice introduction to what is going on. The preview started with Dr. Zurek, a suitably futuristic clever person, completing a droid that carries an important message. This message is destined for Dr. Zurek herself, albeit in another reality, and warns of an invading force that is intent on not only conquering the universe, but every universe in every alternate reality. The cute little droid makes it through to pass on the warning, and thus a rebellion starts to rise up.

 
Introducing the gameplay, the player then takes control of a warrior pilot who has just been shot down in the heat of battle, and must make their way on foot to a certain destination. This gives a nice view of the moment to moment gameplay, as the player clicks on the overworld map in order to move the small pixel character to their destination, which is clearly marked, while investigating various question markers that provide rewards or just more information. To this point, everything is clearly explained.

 
The highlight of Star Renegades so far is the combat, and it really is fun. Massive Damage have gone to town with the mechanics for the combat, throwing all manner of different considerations which can be a little overwhelming. Tutorial windows open to explain the moment to moment actions, but as of right now they can be a little confusing and could do with further explanation when the game actually launches. Still, after a few encounters, it becomes reasonably easy to at least follow, although mastery may take some more time.

 


 
Combat is based on a reactive system, in which a time line is displayed at the top of the screen and the player is able to see exactly what the enemy is going to do and when they will do it. The variety of different moves available to the player will place them in different positions on the time line, and thus allow the player to act before the enemy, if they wish. Acting before the enemy leads to a critical hit, and the enemy can then be pushed back further along the time line, allowing companion characters to maybe perform a slower, more powerful attack before the enemy attack. Push them back far enough on the time line, and the enemies action may be pushed through to the next turn, which could lead to performing another action before them. It’s an excellent system that works very well and emphasises the player carefully planning their attacks and defence.

 
But there is so much more going on to think about in combat. The player is able to bring up all manner of information about their adversary, including the different attacks types that they are weak or strong against. Then there are shields and armour to take into consideration, status effects to keep an eye on, and the possibility that an enemy attack could push the players actions back. And the combat is not easy either, even in this early preview there were some edge of the seat moments.

 
Once a battle is complete, the player grabs their rewards and heads back to the main map to continue their journey or move the story on. The randomised nature of the game means that everything that the player can find will be changed up each time, and in true rogue-lite manner failure in battle will lead to another run in one of the other realities. Research that the player collects during their run can lead to improvements that will run over to the next run, potentially making each run a little bit easier.

 
There are plenty of other features that will be fleshed out in the full game once it arrives. Characters can set up camp at night in order to prepare and heal, but they can also build relationships between the characters, that can lead to combo attacks in battle. Even the enemy seem to evolve as the game progresses, with named enemy characters being able to be promoted and become more powerful.

 


 
Combined with the great pixel-style visuals, complete with dynamic effects that bring the world to life, the various different features in Star Renegades make it an easy game for rogue-lite fans to get excited about. There is a lot going on here, but it will be nice to see how it all comes together once the game launches in September. Check out what the developers have to say about the game –
