Conservation Charity Launches Kakapo Run On iOS & Android

Posted by GG Goblin On October - 22 - 2020

On The EDGE Conservation, in collaboration with Quantum Shift Studios and Playstack, have launched the free-to-play Kakapo Run for iOS and Android devices, raising awareness of the endangered Kakapo species.

Players must get the kakapo to safety by navigating to Sanctuary Island. Environments inspired by New Zealand’s unique and varied landscape set the scene for gameplay: from dense forests to idyllic coastlines; players can even run through the city dodging trams and traffic. Hungry stoats are one of the many threats faced by the kakapo. To stay alive, players can knock out predators, or evade them.

Only around 200 kakapos remain in New Zealand today – mammalian predators, such as the stoat, have wiped out this Critically Endangered species on the mainland. These flightless, nocturnal parrots exist only on heavily controlled island conservation areas.

OTEC aims to raise awareness and support for the kakapo. Initial research from New Zealand indicates ‘Kakapo Run’ has a marked impact on players’ attitudes. The London-based conservation charity is challenging players to pledge their support via social media – built into the mobile game is a mechanism for doing so.

Beth Blood, Founder & CEO, OTEC says:

“EDGE species, such as the kakapo, represent entire branches of the tree of life – if we lose them, there will be nothing like them left in the world. Promoting biodiversity through the unheard voices and untold stories of EDGE species ensures we preserve the widest diversity of life, while maintaining future options for humanity.

“Our ambition with the ‘Kakapo Run’ mobile game is to inspire the next generation to pledge their support for the conservation of this incredible species. By making the kakapo the hero of our first game, we are giving it its moment in the spotlight – evolving mobile app gamers into activists along the way.”

Harvey Elliott, CEO, Playstack says:

“Gaming has long been a destination for players to escape their daily lives and engage with new experiences from around the world. Since the beginning of lockdown the industry has seen significant growth in player volumes and engagement, and it is a perfect time for us to use games as a platform to raise awareness of the plight of unique creatures such as these.”
