Medieval Dynasty Early Access Preview

Posted by GG Goblin On October - 1 - 2020

Harvest Moon, the tougher years.

Medieval Dynasty from Render Cube and Toplitz Productions lists itself as a strategic, survival, simulation RPG, casting the player as a young man from Medieval times who, for one reason or another, has to rebuild their life from scratch. With Medieval Dynasty recently launching on Steam Early Access, GGUK donned their peasant garb and set out into the fields to see just how well this jack of all trades title could juggle all of these genres.

Early Access games are expected to have their flaws, they are unfinished games after all. However, when first jumping into a game as ambitious as Medieval Dynasty, it is easy to see that the groundwork has been done and what is available to play is pretty impressive. However, let’s start at the beginning.

Medieval Dynasty slowly introduces the player to all of the different aspects of the game. To start with, the player is cast into the role of a young man who finds themselves arriving in a valley where they have chosen to begin their new life. With little more than a few food items in their pocket, they will have to deal with familiar survival gaming mechanics to get going. This may start with collecting some sticks and rocks in order to craft an axe that will be able to chop down trees in order to make logs and build a home. They will then have to craft some other rudimentary tools from the resources they can gather, in order to make rabbit traps or hunt animals that will provide basics food. Water will be available from the river to start with, and that will give the player food, water and shelter, the most important aspects for survival.

The thing that may surprise many players coming from other survival games is that there is relatively little for the player to be afraid of. Starvation or thirst is probably the largest risk, but at least they don’t have to worry about dinosaurs, dragons or any type of alien creature. Of course, the players character is not alone in this valley. Aside from the various wild and domesticated animals, there are other regular folk going about their business. This is where the RPG side of the game comes in as further down the line the player will be able to take on quests from many of these people. These are not really epic enough to be called quests and rather would be classed as simply helping out, but they will come with rewards which are always nice. This will allow the player to level up and become more proficient in different areas of survival, while also allowing them access to more and more options.

As the player continues to gather sticks or berries, time will move on and quickly the valley will move from Spring to Summer and so on. The seasons change quickly at the moment, and far too soon Winter will arrive and bring with it all of the pressure of ensuring there is enough food and the like to get through this difficult time. Tools and weapons will degrade, and so will constantly need to be replaced.

The seasons are not the only thing that changes, as the players character will also age over time, and thus comes the dynasty mechanic. As the player gets to grips with keeping themselves alive, they may decide to start setting up their own village. The map is quite large and the player has a certain amount of choice as to where to establish their village, often having to choose between which resource to be near. Either way, building somewhere for the new villagers to live and then convincing them to come down and work on the farms or in the mines, the player will then be responsible for keeping all of these people happy as well, all while making a living and expanding.

Life moves on though, and eventually the players character will meet their end. However, that is not necessarily where the game finishes as the player is able to continue their dynasty. All they will need is to find a wife and have a child, then the player will transfer over to that child once the elder as passed.

Right now, Medieval Dynasty is perfectly playable and has a wide range of things that the player can do. There is a solid skill tree for the player to work through with their character, and a nice selection of buildings to build and items to craft. The visuals are really nice, and the interaction with NPCs bring life to the world. However, there is a way to go yet. Balance seems to be something that needs to be worked on, and the developers have already promised more to do, such as fishing and bandit fighting. Given that the developers are rolling out patches on an almost daily basis, I would fully expect all issues to be fixed and the game to be vastly expanded before the official launch.

Channelling such diverse games as Banished, Conan Exiles, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and even a splash of Harvest Moon, Medieval Dynasty is trying to juggle a lot of balls. However, at this point in Early Access, it seems to be keeping them all in the air. The game is more laid back than many survival games, but already has plenty to do and plays well. So, anyone looking for their own Medieval life simulator, Medieval Dynasty will be the game to watch. Find out more details and wishlist Medieval Dynasty on Steam.
