Immortals Fenyx Rising

Posted by GG Goblin On December - 16 - 2020

Saving the Greek gods.

Love them or hate them, Ubisoft’s open-world games tend to be more focussed on older gamers. However, with their new title Immortals Fenyx Rising, Ubisoft seem to be catering to the more family friendly market, perhaps with a little sprinkle of Nintendo magic. With some cheeky humour for more mature gamers, Immortals Fenyx Rising promises an entertaining, and very beautiful, open-world adventure that should have something for everyone.

The story, which revolves around Greek mythology, has the evil Typhon breaking free of the underworld to inflict revenge on Zeus and the other gods. Having already pretty much taken control of the Golden Isles, Typhon has forced Zeus to ask Prometheus how this can all be stopped. And so, Zeus and Prometheus start narrating the tale of the Human, Fenyx, that will eventually save the gods. The story is mostly narrated by Prometheus, with Zeus constantly butting in with small quips that may or may not land with the players depending on their age. The story is a wealth of information regarding Greek mythology, but there is no previous knowledge required to enjoy the tale.

This all leads to the player taking control of Fenyx, our hero for this story. The player will have a small amount of customisation options, including choosing the sex of the hero, and then will find themselves washed up on the beach. Discovering most of their shipmates, including their brother, already turned to stone, Fenyx vows to find a way to reverse this, which leads them on a path to saving the gods themselves.

It is a great way to start the game, and that family friendly appeal is obvious from the start. Sure, there is a level of threat, and sometimes the narration can get a little close to the edge, but it all feels very well designed to appeal to the widest range of players. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the game is the beautiful open-world in which it is set.

From the very beginning, Immortals looks absolutely stunning. It is not the largest open world, but it still manages to cover most of the different biomes that players would expect, giving plenty of variety as the player explores. The great thing is that the world is packed with things to do, avoiding the whole awkward wandering that is often found in open-world games. Reaching a high point in the world, it is easy to see that this place is alive, always leaving the player with decisions to make as to where they go. Do they follow the main quest marker, or do they head off towards that interesting looking spot on the horizon? It really is very impressive.

When it comes to playing the game, the player has plenty to think about. The overall objective is to find the essence of various gods to give them their power back, and in doing so the player will find themselves having to solve puzzles, explore and fight plenty of monsters. The exploration is great, simply because the world is so good looking. For faster travel, the player is able to tame horses to ride, and Fenyx is able to climb pretty much anything. However, the player has to be aware of their stamina, a stat that can be increased through the course of the game, as climbing uses stamina up. There are ways to replenish stamina, so stocking up on these would be a good idea before any large scale mountain climb.

From time to time, the player will have to venture into a Vault that takes them to Tartaros. These areas act as temples of sorts, rewarding the player for completion, and will generally require solving some puzzles. The Vaults are quite good fun, and essential to the progression of the character, but are not always obvious in what the player is supposed to do, and can drag on longer than they need to.

As a mere mortal, Fenyx is quite underpowered to begin with. The combat in the early game is simple and generally unsatisfying. However, as the player makes their way through the game, discovers more and more treasures or challenges, and gains the means to upgrade their gear and unlock new skills, the fighting becomes more and more enjoyable. Weapon variety is limited, but kept fresh with new skins that bring bonuses. The combat, with the light and heavy attacks, along with dodge or parry options, tends to be quite smooth, and things do get far more interesting once combos and special moves are thrown into the mix.

Immortals Fenyx rising does a lot of things right. The glorious open-world, the evolving hero, the abundance of things to do and discover. However, it does take a little while for the game to open up and reveal itself, leaving the early part of the game feeling slightly uninspired. Also, the forced family friendliness of the game does feel as though it holds back possibilities.

Ubisoft may have borrowed ideas from other titles in Immortals Fenyx Rising, but their ability to craft a masterful open-world has never been in doubt. The game may not be the most original, but with a beautiful world, plenty to do and a compelling story, there are plenty of reasons to play Immortals. The family friendly approach to Greek mythology and open-world adventuring simply may not appeal to some players, but for those willing to take a chance, Immortals Fenyx Rising is an incredible adventure that is easy to get lost in.
