PDP Gaming Joy-Con Charging Grip Plus

PDP’s Wireless Switch Controller Options: Part One.

The Nintendo Switch is unique among consoles, not only because it is both a handheld and a home console, but also because it comes with two controllers in the box. The Joy-Cons are great little controllers and make for fun times when playing with a friend, but using one Joy-Con is no good for many, more complex games. Nintendo have that covered too, with an included Grip that combines the two Joy-Cons into one unit, much more akin to a classic controller. The first of PDP Gaming’s wireless Switch controller options that we will be looking at is the Joy-Con Charging Grip Plus, a much more functional version of Nintendo’s own Grip.

Opening the box, the user is presented with a solid looking hunk of grey plastic. Now, I don’t know if PDP have any plans for different colours, but the grey really doesn’t do it any favours. It also has to be said that it doesn’t look very impressive, initially looking like yet another one of those limps of plastic that will quickly be cast into the cupboard. However, there is much more to the Joy-Con Charging Grip Plus than first meets the eye.

There are two very obvious slots into which the Joy-Con will slide, and these are accessed by sliding a small button along the top side of the Grip. At this point, the entire top edge flips open to reveal the slots. Slide them both in, one on each side, and then flip the top edge back into place. With the Joy-Cons in place, it is easy to see how functional the Grip Plus is.

The Grip Plus is larger than a regular grip, making it feel much more like a regular controller, albeit with all of the usual Joy-Con functions. It feels more comfortable in the hands, and has a nice weight, making it great for extended gaming sessions. Perhaps most excitingly, thanks in part to that flipping top edge, the Grip Plus includes extensions for the L, R, ZL and ZR buttons. This makes them far easier to press than those on the regular Joy-Cons and again more in line with other controllers.

The other great function of the Grip Plus comes from its charging capability. Anyone who has an extra set of Joy-Cons will know that they then either need to buy some kind of charging dock, or keep attaching them to the main Switch unit to charge. Those who leave their Switch in the dock, perhaps in front of their TV, will also know that slotting the Joy-Cons on to charge is a bit of a bore, sometimes turning the Switch on, causing the TV to turn over at that crucial moment, and resulting in plentiful shouting. The good news is that the Grip Plus solves those problems.

The Grip Plus also acts as a charging dock, albeit one that does more than just charge. On that top edge of the Grip Plus, there is a recessed USB Type C socket that will allow for any attached Joy-Cons to be charged. A lengthy cable is included in the box, which is handy as while plugged in and charging, the Grip Plus can also be used. This is great as it means the fun never has to stop. Small lights on the bottom edge of the Grip Plus will show the charging status of each Joy-Con, so the user will know when they can unplug and sit back.

The Joy-Con Charging Grip Plus serves two purposes. It is a charging dock for those extra Joy-Cons, and a more comfortable Grip for those wanting a more traditional controller experience on Switch. It is very well made and while it may not look great, it serves a very specific purpose. For anyone with an extra set of Joy-Cons, or want to turn their Joy-Cons into a more traditional controller, the Joy-Con Charging Grip Plus is a perfect solution.
